We are two introverts from Australia, so we don't usually gravitate towards homestay or BnB style accommodation, however pickings are slim here in Mutianyu! So we selected this homestay and were so pleasantly surprised by our experience. Staff (this is a family run business) are kind and professional, offering friendly service that isn't overbearing. We were picked up from and dropped back to the Beijing Train Station in a clean and comfortable car for a very reasonable price (it's 90 minutes each way, not a short trip). The accommodation is already inside the scenic area so you can very much avoid the whole shuttle bus situation, and we were dropped off right to the base of the climb! We recommend trying to go in the afternoon, it was super quiet as we'd missed the tour busses and the crowds who mostly arrive in the morning. Most of our pictures have no other human beings in them! We had a delicious vegan dinner and breakfast provided with no fuss and lots of flavour. When paying for our room we also paid for our Wall tickets and add-ons which were purchased and organised on our behalf. Bonus adorable kittens and cats roaming outside the property 😍 The room had a beautiful view of the mountain and even a tiny peak of the wall. Bed was comfortable and the room was warm and clean. Plenty of water and snacks provided too. Very simple room with just the bed, one bedside table, a small seat with table, and a small bathroom, but that's all we needed.

Wonderful stay right at the foot of the Great Wall! The room was spacious with a beautiful view of the river and mountains. Breakfast was excellent, and the property also serves dinner with good options. If you’re craving a great bowl of noodles or wontons, the host can recommend a delicious spot just across the street. The Great Wall entrance is only a 5-minute walk away. The place is accessible by public transport (around a couple of hours’ journey from Beijing).

The hotel is a beautiful property really well decorated. It’s a great place to chose if you have kids. The owner is very welcoming and helpful and her husband cooks delicious Chinese meals. The entrance to the Great Wall is at about 2 minutes walk from the hotel.

My stay at the Derunju Guesthouse, Huairou, at the Great Wall of China: My stay at the Derunju Guesthouse, Huairou, at the Great Wall of China: “The location was magical. Although I did not have a room with a view, as soon as I got out into the corridor, I was surrounded by the beauty of the rugged landscape rising far above, bearing a section of the Great Wall. Having few guests at that rapidly turning wintry weather, the proprietress accompanied me the next day on a 6-km 6-hour walk on the Wall starting from the Guesthouse in Derunju Village. It was a sunny day and this turned out a glorious walk, in which my warm-hearted host showed me every consideration, and we were as companionable as old friends. She told everyone we met that I was 79 and from Malaysia. We climbed up to more than one hill station, the steps in some places being knee-high, and at one point we could see on the opposite side of the lake the section of the Great Wall where it slopes dramatically into the water. In the evening, I feasted on my host’s heartily delicious cuisine… And over the few days of my stay she cooked hot sour soup, jiaozi (northern dumplings) eaten with extremely hot chilli oil, local millet porridge, freshly caught local fish in a local sauce, and home-grown vegetables... We went on a road trip to see some other local sights as well; and I was also very grateful that she helped arrange a taxi for my onward trip to Beijing city. Many thanks for an unforgettable visit. While the price was a little high compared to other places of this standard, you cannot beat it for its location and the serenity of the environment that it is situated within. The staff are great and do their best to make sure that you have what you need and when you need it. The views from the room, if it isn't foggy, are simply stunning and time seems to stand still when you are staying there. Stan kindly provided us with transport to and from the Great Wall and this helped to set up a wonderful day for us.
