Beachcomber Lodge offers everything you need for a relaxing getaway. Set on 5 beautiful acres, it is a short stroll from Ned’s Beach and Middle Beach. Clean and well appointed, in line with reasonable expectations for the price. Paul is the main reason we will return there as a priority, service and kindness like that is rare. Have stayed at other lodges and it did not exist at those places.

Arajilla Retreat is located in a forest area just behind Old Settlement Beach on Lord Howe Island. Guests can choose from a range of 1-bedroom and 2-bedroom luxurious suites. We all had a fantastic stay and the staff had excellent service. The all-inclusive dining was wonderful too.
The location of Beachcomber Lodge is at the top of a VERY STEEP hill which made pushbike riding back to Beachcomber a VERY LONG uphill slog. If we come back to Lord Howe Island we will stay closer to the town on more level ground. There was no restaurant at Beachcomber, so the Best restaurant "Anchorage" at the bottom of the steep hill.
A week is a good length stay. Chose a different eatery each night to spread the tourist dollar around. Strongly recommended tours are glass bottomed boat with Islander Cruises to see coral, fish & turtles plus Chase'n'Thyme Island Tour which lasts close on 3 hours. Must also visit Ned's Beach and feed the fish. Many bush walks to do and a visit to the Museum is also a must-do.
Absolutely stunning. Love the wild and unique environment of the island -- birdlife including migratory birds and nesting sites, ocean, coral reefs, turtles and fishlife, forests, beaches,/cliffs/mountains, walks and hikes. Quiet and beautiful, with a focus on the beauty and uniqueness of the environment and the need to protect it, rather than 'resort' facilities. We have been back four times now, and hope to have the chance to come back again.
LHI is a tropical wonderland. Coral and fish are amazing. Short or long, easy and difficult walks, hikes are available. LHI is very much into recycling. It is a very clean island. Book dinner only, any night. Book tours and activities if you can before you go. If not, the boatsheds are open, but I suggest booking the moment you arrive on the island. Definitely hire a bike. Good way to get around. The eateries and restaurants are superb and top notch. Be prepared for a mixture of weather (sun, rain and wind). Most things you can hire for water activities. Most places take credit card payments.
Activities on Lord Howe include cycling (transport), bushwalking, snorkelling, fishing, diving and eating. Most of these are weather dependent, with wind almost always present. For an island dependent on tourism the locals are ambivalent at best to tourists. Reef N Beyond (Galapagos shark encounter) were an engaging tour operator, who provided an informative and fun tour. Lord Howe Environment Tours (Mount Gower; Ultimate snorkelling) provided a minimal service (left and returned on time; limited engagement; aim appeared to be to finish the activity with minimal engagement and in the shortest time). All food on the island is expensive…with cost not being equivalent to quality! The brewery provided great beer and pizza. The snorkelling from the beach was easy and good. In summary, an expensive place to visit, with weather dependent activities, little else to do in bad weather and at best an ambivalent local community. A unique island experience but the activities provided could be better experienced (price and operators) else where in the world.
I loved Lord Howe Island. It is the perfect place to escape the city, reconnect with nature and have some great adventures. Balls Pyramid was spectacular, the snorkelling was in pristine waters and the turtles were huge. I loved the amazing number and variety of birds. I would score LHI as 10 out of 10!
