Some of the people were GREAT!
Some of the people were GREAT!!! and others were scum suckers and big time liars. It is just my experience but I will take Honduras over Guatemala on this trip. Tons of great people, fate just wasn't with me in this country, this time.

Safer than the last time I went to Guatemala - about 25 yrs ago- . A lot of non tourist places to explore. Beautiful country side. The only tourist area I explored were Antigua,lake atitlan, Flores which are well suited for tourist, with all the services they might desire. Other parts of the country some level of spanish is required. I spent 7 months traveling mostly northern part of Guatemala, only seeing a fraction of what the country has to offer to travelers.

Beautiful country, incredibly kind and helpful local people (a little spanish goes miles), affordable, and with a variety of options at all price points. Not quite as cheap as expected (coffees will typically be about 25-30 Quetzales/~$4USD, food anywhere between 50-200 quetzales). Transportation between cities is around $25-35USD for shared shuttles (I highly recommend this option), or about $100USD for ubers (I do not recommend this option as private drivers may not have experience driving to and from the places you desire AND it is much more expensive AND you will not be with other travelers so they may in turn feel less safe). Overall very safe feeling country, even at night especially in places like Antigua/El Paredon/San Pedro La Laguna. Obviously, use your best judgement. I would avoid going to San Marcos La Laguna in the Lake Atitlan area unless you are interested in being surrounded by drugged-up hippie tourists. San Marcos La Laguna was the only place I visited in Guatemala that felt unsafe.

I love Guatemala.
I love Guatemala. My main interest is textiles, so I was in heaven there. I read warnings of danger to travelers to Guatemala, and was worried about going, but we found the local people very friendly and so likeable. We did spend most of our time at Lake Atitlan and tried to avoid the cities. For other textile traveler I recommend 'A Textile Traveler's Guide to Guatemala' by Deborah Chandler.

Guatemala is a very colorful and fascinating country. Tikal, Antigua and Lake Atitlan are world class scenery. The Mayan people are still very much alive with their beautiful vivid color clothing and smiling faces. They are generally very friendly and almost spiritual feeling with a different vibe than people in Mexico. The climate is perfect at around 70 degrees in the Highlands. I feel it is very safe there if you stay in main areas. Don't hesitate to visit Guatemala if you want a true 3rd world experience!

I didn't do too much research on what to do in Guatemala City. In hindsight, I would've enjoyed checking out the Museum of Anthropology which is 3 minute drive from the airport and the Mercado Artesania, also about 15 minute drive from the airport. The museum would've been a great intro before flying out to visit Mayan ruins around Flores. Instead, I only had a late afternoon to check out the Metropolitan Cathedral and the plaza. Granted I was only in Guatamala City for half a day.

I traveled with my mom and sister and we needed a place near the airport for an early flight the next morning. It's walking distance from GUA! We also walked to the zoo and Mercado de Artesanías. The beds are very comfortable and the room was spacious. The whole place was very clean too. They also let us store our luggage before checking in and after checking out. We bought traditional dinner at the hotel and it was delicious too

Clean, comfortable, convenient. Nice little hotel to stay in the night before an early flight out of GUA. Free shuttle service will take you to the airport in 2 minutes. No restaurant, but they will prepare a small meal from a limited menu with room service.
