Naples reminds me of parts of Istanbul (where I live). It was that same vibe of chaos and energy. Totally love Naples. I recommend the Spanish Quarter (it's noisy but earplugs work). The vibe there is great. Toledo metro would be a close metro to aim for to take you to Garibaldi for day trips to Pompeii, Herculaneum, Oplontis etc. If you only want to see 1 site, then pick Herculaneum. It's more manageable in size. A different kind of impressive. Naples was the first pro-Palestine city in Italy, which made me love it more. Eat well. Try everything. Immerse yourself in the craziness that is Naples. You'll return feeling you lived something.
Naples is a bit gritty, but I loved my time here. The city is very walkable. I didn't like that they have a lot of dog poo in the streets, but I loved everything else. We loved the pizza and coffee (we drink single or double espresso) was the best. We also loved the chocolate - we eat 85-90% and every supermarket had a different awesome manufacturer of this bitter percentage, all great. Tones of history and art in the city itself (Palazzo Reale, underground tours were very interesting, Galleria d'italia was wonderful), which we loved, and many locations for day trips: Day trips by train to Pompei, Herculaneum, Sorrento, and Caserta were wonderful.
I was told to be cautious when walking around the city before I went, but I had no problems and enjoyed walking around the city. There was so much life on the streets at all times of the day and into the evening. There was so much to see and excellent views from the highest points in Naples and from the top of Vesuvius. So much to see a short train ride away - Pompeii and more. I would have liked to have stayed longer because Sorrento and Capri are so close. The temperature in October was perfect.
We loved Naples. We did not encounter any problems while visiting, and it is extremely comfortable that you can walk almost everywhere or if further public transport is so easy to use. We also went to Pompeii and Vesuvius by public transport, which I honestly recommend. All the organized excursions were waaaaay overpriced.
I spent 4 weeks in Naples, studying and exploring. There is a lot to see and do. It's easy to get around, walking, Metro, bus, train. But, Naples is not for the faint of heart. The streets are loud and supercrowded. Lots of people in narrow streets, cars honking, motorbikes weaving in and out the pedestrian areas. I was near Centro Storico. It's exhausting. But, you are rewarded with a beautiful 'lungomare'-seafront, rich history, gorgeous churches, museums, and the best food. If you need to escape the chaos, go up to Vomero or say in Chiaia. Take an easy train to Salerno. Or the ferry to Ischia. Four weeks and I still didn't do everything I had wanted to get to see!
Naples has a different attitude than Rome or Florence. Not as much of the English language is spoken and the locals seem somewhat indifferent to tourists. I didn't see or hear as much English speaking people either. The city isn't as clean as Florence and graffiti is more prevalent. I also had to watch closer for dog crap on the sidewalk. To experience Naples you need to do side trips to places like Pompeii and the Amalfi coast; Pompeii by train and Amalfi by bus tour. I feel that 3 to 4 nights is adequate for Naples.
