Kashima
Situated just 47 km from Yoshinogari Historical Park, Guest House Maru provides accommodation in Kashima with access to a garden, a bar, as well as luggage storage space. This guest house features free private parking, a shared kitchen and free WiFi. The guest house has family rooms. I booked a room here as I was traveling to Japan to play a Pokemon Go event in Nagasaki. I had a wonderful time in this house and the charming, little town it is in. It’s like staying in a beautiful, ancestral home of a Japanese family. I actually lowered my expectations for a bit because it’s not a hotel, but even then I was surprised by how well-kept, sparkly clean everything is. I shared the house with 3 other guests who are also in Japan to play Pokemon Go, and yet I didn’t see a single strand of hair left in the bathroom, a smidge of stain in the toilet, and I didn’t hear noise at night. It’s family-run and they do everything by themselves. I was coming in from Fukuoka Airport and it took me a while to figure out the trains and the transfers I would take to get to Kashima and arrived late at 8:30PM, it’s way past check in time but even then I had a warm welcome from the owner, Mr Maru. He showed me where the restaurants are, which places to visit, where the nearest 7-eleven is. He even let me in the staff-only area of the kitchen when he noticed that I brought dinner that I needed to reheat from 7-eleven. In the morning I met his older sister in the kitchen and she made me breakfast. She showed me where Yutoku Inari shrine is which I planned to visit on that day. I rented a bicycle at the Hizen-Hama station which is just like 150 meters from the house and biked around Kashima, ate Mikan ice cream, until I reached Yutoku Inari shrine. It is an amazing place. In the evening when I returned the bike at Hizen-Hama station, I went to its Sake bar which serves all the sake this little town produces and I was warmly welcomed even though I don’t speak a word of Nihongo. I tried all the types of sake that they have as I knew I can get smashed and still find my way home because the house is just a stone’s throw away from the station. Overall I had a pretty amazing experience and would gladly visit again.

Exception service at every level. The staff are really helpful! I got put in one of the quieter parts of the hotel which was really nice. Had no problems at all. I had a room with a big bathtub which was really nice.
The onsen baths were amazing - one large indoor, 2 outdoors with 2 additional ceramic tubs, and an expansive view of the surroundings. We booked a traditional room, so had to make our own futons which the kids loved helping to set it up. We were travelling the Kyushu region for the last 12 days, and definitely the best hotel breakfast we have had. It’s an old hotel, but it looks like internal renovations were done. A quaint old world feel.. jazz music was in the lobby and at the bath foyer.
Great location. Spacious for Japan. Parking. Big pluses for kitchenette and washing machine and dryer although you'll need to be able to read Japanese to read the instructions.
Very clean and the room has space. Nice view from the window. Near the train stop « Aki-arita » and near a lot of potery galleries. Quiet aera.
This hotel is a typical Japanese style accommodation. It is very comfortable having a lounge and kitchen where you can sit western style but still is typically Japanese. It also looked onto a quaint little garden. It is in the middle of the porcelain street in Arita if that is what you are going there for. The owner is very helpful and speaks English if required. Some nice little temples and porcelain museums around. Short taxi ride from the station or quite a long walk. A nice quiet place to stay.
Exceptionally clean and modern hotel with a dormitory room for backpackers like myself. Great location a short walk from Karatsu station. There is a cafe downstairs with breakfast options and there are many izakayas and other restaurants nearby for dinner.
Ideal in every sense - there is nothing remotely comparable in Arita. On every level, an ideal location to stay. If you are interested in ceramics, well, welcome to heaven on earth. Absolutely brilliant. The price might seem a bit high but you get what you pay for - in this case, a five star boutique experience that is unmatched in this part of Kyushu. The perfect host, the perfect space.
Staff were very accommodating and helped us sort out duplicated bookings. Room was comfortable, felt luxurious and quiet. Breakfast was good. Great location. Good parking space. Less than 10 min drive to Mifuneyama Park.
Quaint quiet , well located . Nice in house onsen
Suzi the owner was fantastic, and she made me feel very welcomed and right at home. She was extremely helpful in recommending me good places to visit in the Karatsu area, and guided me on how to get there using public transportation and the bicycles available for use at the hostel! The homestay was in a quaint little area down a quiet street, while being very well located between the train station and the beach. Having tea on the back porch while watching the sunset was very relaxing.
