We talked and learned a lot :) the room was big and comfortable, the view and singing of the birds in the morning made the day brighter :)

We also had a BBQ together on the front deck!

This 3-star ryokan offers a housekeeping service and private check-in and check-out. Tsuta Hot Spring is 36 km away and Hirosaki Castle is 22 km from the ryokan. This is a traditional Japanese ryokan with public baths (gender separated). Dinner and breakfast are amazing and plentiful, with locally sourced organic produce (even coffee!). Our room (Japanese room with private toilet) was to the left of the entrance. It was very spacious. The heater worked very well as autumn night was a bit damp and cold. The beds are futons on wood bed frames on tatami, and they are super comfortable. As I have a whole-leg tattoo which is usually not permitted in the public baths, I notified Ranko in advance, and she reserved the private bath for us. The private bath was a very beautiful blue ceramic bath filled with warm (I don’t think it’s very hot) healing hot spring water from the area. Ranko’s warm personality really made the stay memorable. Be sure to ask her for recommendations of the areas. She is a well of knowledge of the area!

Minpaku Suzuki is set in Hiraizumi, less than 1 km from Motsuji Temple, 2.5 km from Chuson-ji Temple, and 5.5 km from Takkoku Seikou-ji Temple. With free WiFi, this 1-star homestay offers luggage storage space and bicycle parking. The homestay features family rooms. We had a wonderful stay at Minpaku Suzuki! The hosts were very friendly and gave us a warm welcome. The room was spacious, clean and quiet. There is no bathroom but the nearby onsen is adequate. The breakfast was delicious, way above our expectations. Highly recommended!

Situated 14 km from Motsuji Temple, Matakitai offers 1-star accommodation in Ichinoseki and has a garden. This guest house features free private parking, a shared kitchen and free WiFi. The accommodation provides bicycle parking and a shared lounge for guests. The property is nice and cozy, walk a little (approximately 6mins) from the Ofunato line mataki station. The day I’m arrived the ofunato line was suspended til the evening but the host is very nice and helpful, he picked us up and drove us to the ichenoseki station on the checked out day. Though the host isn’t fluent in English, he trying to communicate and help us in anything he’s incredibly good!!

The absolute highlight of our stay was Guest House Chara, run by the kindest elderly couple, Fusao and Toshiko. Their warmth and hospitality made us feel completely at home—it wasn’t just a place to sleep, it truly felt like staying with family. Their house told a story, filled with warmth, history, and the little personal touches that made it feel lived-in and loved. From the amazing homemade breakfast to the delicious ramen dinners they prepared, every meal was made with care and love. The guest house is conveniently located, just a short walk from a supermarket and a laundromat, which made things really easy for us. This personal, welcoming experience truly made our trip special. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a meaningful, off-the-beaten-path experience in Japan. ありがとうございます
