Ararat is a good base to use for exploring nearby areas such as the Grampians.It has local attractions as well.Train service to Melbourne is available and coach services from the station to other towns leave from the station too.Nice botanical garden for a walk as well.A visit to the tourist centre would be a worthwile stop for information.

Ararat is a lovely town in itself and has everything you need, town hall, art gallery, many shops, antiques, eating places, gift shops, swimming pool, indoor and out, recreation, park, drives up to Halls Gap and tourist attractions areas.
Didn't like the mess and Barracks much, it was cheap and very pub style.

Personally went to Ararat for ghost hunting at Aradale...
Personally went to Ararat for ghost hunting at Aradale asylum and found myself quite happy with the other facilities, the town is quite cute with not too heavy traffic at most points of the day with good historical sightseeing and nature views!

J division jail was interesting wish tour went longer though tour guide was great knowledgeable 2 hour tour volunteers run tours 👍one tree outlook great as you have all angles of town and surrounding from viewing Musuem great also past history and memorabilia -green hill lake wonderful missed seeing asylum tour definetly will come back to see that over all Ararat has some wonderful sightseeing food outlets restaurants and friendly people

It was a good a good base for two nights (we booked an extra night) because it is easy drive to Halls Gap to walk in the Grampians and also tour around the area. Ararat has a museum, art gallery and delightful gardens to walk through. Has retained lot of Art Deco buildings which gives it a lovely ambience.

Local interesting history, being the JWard prison and Ararat Lunatic Asylum - both worth a visit. Town centre has ample cafes and restaurants to suit all tastes, and shopping to suit all interests. Short drive to Stawell, Halls Gap and Grampians. An interesting and worthwhile place to visit.

The Courthouse Hotel Ararat exceeded my expectations! I was in an apartment attached to the hotel. It was extremely clean, with everything you need. If you’re looking for history this hotel has it in buckets. it is a beautiful 150+ years old hotel in the centre of Ararat. Step out the door and you’re in the main street of Ararat. The apartment also had fabulous views to the mountains. Brian the owner is very helpful and friendly. The meals are lovely. 10/10!

Second time staying here. Very close to the town centre and rooms are spacious and recently renovated with well stocked mini bar. Shower in the bathroom had good water pressure. Nothing to complain and will be staying here again if passing through Ararat.

Loved the cabin I was given. Large, modern with everything you need. Bed was ultra comfortable. Can't wait to get back to Ararat again so I can stay here again.

Lovely and clean room, spacious and relaxing. As a single traveler I felt safe. A 5min drive to Ararat parkrun course, so that was a bonus.
