Gorgeous fauna in the surrounding area.

Gorgeous fauna in the surrounding area. River trips were extremely fun, as I spent three days fishing rio negro, solimoes, and rio amazonas. I highly recomend visiting. I did not see one single mosquito, as I travelled during dry season at the end of October.

Manaus is a not a paricularly great turist city unless you are crazy about visiting the amazon river speciically. The city is dirty, the traffic caotic the people rude. There are better options. Nevertheless if you do find yourself in Manaus already, there are e few things to do. visit the opera house, go on the river tour and swim with the river dolphins. try and get out of the city for a day in the jungle...

Manaus is an important starting point near the Amazon Rainforest, there is an incredible visual phenomenon called "encontro das aguas", indigenous tribes, Teatro Amazonas, waterfalls and cave in Presidente Figueiredo. Also you have to try the different types of fish typical of the region.

Manaus is ugly and charmless.

Manaus is ugly and charmless. The real attraction of Amazonas state is the Amazon Rain Forest itself, so either skip Manaus altogether or 3 days is plenty of time to get the feel of the place. Even the food culture is relatively bland and unexceptional. If you do decide to stay in the city, go to Presidente Figuereido to see the waterfalls. But most people will be using Manaus as a launching pad for exploring the Amazon.

Manaus as a city is ugly and charmless.

Manaus as a city is ugly and charmless. Except for the downtown area, there is nothing architecturally of interest. It's an industrial working-man's town with very little to recommend it except the surrounding Amazonian forest. The food is good if you like fish. Otherwise, I had only two meals during my three week stay that were memorable. I was studying Portuguese there, so my teacher and other students made the trip memorable. The people are generally quite lovely, but there is a strong strain of Christian Evangelicalism.

OMG - this hotel, tugged away and not immediately visible - was SO great. We had an amazing time. The service, the room, the facilities were all superb. The restaurant - more on the pricey side like the Hotel - served very nice food, too. Breakfast as well as for dinner. Do yourself a favor and get the room with breakfast. It’s totally worth it.

The host helped me a lot with accommodation some unforeseen changes to my travel plans, including luggage storage for some hours on my departure date. Accommodation is basic but contained everything I needed for my stay in Manaus. It's not a fancy hotel, but was sufficient to me.

Hotel is located close to the city center. We could leave our suitcases at the hotel for safekeeping while we were in the jungle.
