FAQs about hotels in Basel

Switzerland Through the Ages

At the meeting point of Switzerland, Germany and France, Basel is an eclectic mix of historic and modern, tranquil and vibrant, with Swiss cleanliness and efficiency thrown in for good measure.

Augusta Raurica, on the outskirts, has a well-preserved Roman theater, while the Old Town is a museum of medieval buildings. The Renaissance Town Hall looks down on Marktplatz’s daily market, while the red sandstone and colorful tiles of the Münster were reconstructed in the 19th century. Bringing it right up to date are the modern creations of city residents Herzog & De Meuron, designers of London’s Tate Modern.

When you’ve finished exploring this architectural heritage, there are still plenty of things to do in Basel. The city’s fine art museum is the world’s oldest art collection, and the zoo is the oldest and largest in Switzerland. Remember to bring plenty of Swiss francs for the shopping mile along Clarastrasse and Freiestrasse.

The Basel accommodations on Booking.com range from hotels in Grossbasel to B&Bs in Kleinbasel, home to the nightlife. If you’re flying into Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg Airport in February or March, you might just catch Fasnacht, Switzerland’s biggest carnival. You’ll have to get up early to catch the 4 am start, though!

What Guests Said About Basel:

Basel was a nice surprise.

Basel was a nice surprise. A lot of old world charm, great traditional bakeries and coffee houses. The transportation is super with trams and buses running frequently. It felt large enough without being touristy. The fine arts museum is top notch h with some great artists represented.

A great base to have when exploring Switzerland.

A great base to have when exploring Switzerland. Basel is full of history and has one of the best local history museums I've seen. One could spend the whole day in the Basel Historical Museum. From the Bronze Age to modern times, this place has it. Various restaurants and all types of shopping dot the Old Town area. The transportation system(city trams and trains) is on time and efficient. We explored Zermatt and Lucerne, while keeping a base in Basel. The international airport has easy access from downtown.

Basel is a very nice city and definitely worth visiting. Make sure to hire a bike, go along the Rhine and visit 3 countries in just a couple of hours. The Markthalle is a must. However, everything is pricey.

I realised Basel was expensive compared with UK but I found supermarket food and juice was ok especially smoked salmon. Trams and trains very frequent and on time. Early October but dry and blue sky every day. Streets were very clean.

Didn't really know what to expect in Basel but really enjoyed our stay. It is bigger than I expected but the transport network is really efficient and with the Basel card it is free. The place we enjoyed the most was the Zoo - spent all day there - highly recommend it (and it is half price entry with the Basel card). Lots of interesting streets and bars, cafes, restaurants etc..

We started with.dinner at Restaurant Fiorentina on the patio overlooking the river. On the morning went to the visitors center on Steinerberg. Downloaded the self guided tour and we were off. Very easy to see the city on foot and was very comfortable on our own touring.

Good amenities - an oven, washing machine, dishwasher, and stove. The bathroom was very nice and modern. It has a great shower and the TV was ideal for late night viewing. The check-in process was very smooth. The location was great as it was walking distance from the main areas. I personally wasn't a fan of Basel as there isn't a lot to do to be honest. It is stupidly expensive and I'm sure there's much better cities to visit in Switzerland. I won't be visiting Basel again.

As expected, this apartment deserves its high rating. Our second booking is also nearing its end, and I must say, I really enjoy the city of Basel. Switzerland is filled with beautiful scenery everywhere you go. Additionally, I want to inform you that a plate cracked yesterday when we were heating food in the microwave. Thank you for providing such a high-quality accommodation.

The hotel was okay priced considering Switzerland is quite expensive to stay, it’s a short walk from station which we needed as was going to be travelling from trains. Basel city card always a plus. No major issues

The hotel is very comfortable and convenient, with a great breakfast. The bathroom is very good with a great shower that doesn't spray water outside of the shower stall (first time in Switzerland!).
