Cosy Gem At the Foot of Matterhorn
A beautiful car-free village in the Swiss Alps, Zermatt is world-famous for its skiing and mountaineering qualities. Standing in the shadow of the impressive Matterhorn, this is a true Alpine paradise, popular with both celebrities and citizens of all nationalities.

We had already been up four mountain peaks in Switzerland so we were more interested in the area than going up another peak. Great little village with no cars, only small electric vehicles. Great food, good shopping and stunning views of then Matterhorn. Nice to walk the streets with no worry of traffic. There was a small group of older local musicians dressed in traditional clothing who played at a location and then moved on to another location to play. Unfortunately there was heavy cloud cover the two days I was there and didn’t see the Matterhorn at all. Web cams at top showed nothing so didn’t go up. Gornergrat trip was worthwhile and good views of everything except the Matterhorn.i enjoyed walking round the old town. We had exceptional weather 26 degrees and no clouds, so the Gornergrat is a MUST DO in these conditions. Even paragliding should be considered. The town isn't big, so a good walk around is a great introduction, beware of the electric bikes as you walk down the high street ! Stunning alpine village. Definitely add Zermatt to your list when visiting Switzerland. We could definitely have spent more time enjoying Zermatt and surrounds. We were very happy with our choice of accommodation. Hotel Walliserhof is good value for the area compared to many other hotels. Just a few minutes walk from the station - we saw quite a few other people walking uphill to their hotels so it was really nice to walk just a few mins and be there. Lovely staff, very welcoming and helpful. The room was very comfortable and clean, we loved the fire in the evening. But the best part was the Spa - such a calming, wonderful space to relax in after a morning of hiking, or to sit in the sun after a busy day. Monique has a lot of love and passion for her hotel and her guests and it shows through in every aspect of this wonderful hotel. We stayed in the best room with a view of the matterhorn and she made sure we were happy. Her bar was always packed and it is low season and her restaurant full (again low season).
