Canos Cristales is stunning and well worth the trip.
Canos Cristales is stunning and well worth the trip. The beauty of the rock formations, the crystal clear waters, and many colors of the river are truly stunning. It was one of our best trips in Colombia. We had a local guide, which is highly recommended and well worth it. The town is quaint, meals were plentiful, and there are plenty of options for rustic but comfortable accomodation.

It's a special place, but to truly appreciate its beauty, everything has to come together perfectly. In the right months, with the right weather, and with the right guides, you can witness spectacular natural scenery (colors, seaweed, rocks, waterfalls, etc.). Therefore, I would definitely recommend booking the 4-day, 3-night tour. While it's generally overpriced, at least the money benefits the local population.

La Macarena is a rapidly growing city.
La Macarena is a rapidly growing city. A complete change of scenery is guaranteed. Not all the roads are paved. Horses are still used as a means of transport. The people are friendly and smiling. I would have liked to spend an evening in La Macarena, but it wasn't planned.

La Macarena is quite expensive due to tourist taxes.
La Macarena is quite expensive due to tourist taxes. But it's been on our bucket list for several years, and it remains an absolutely fantastic experience. The nature is incredibly beautiful. The park is well-maintained, and sustainability and conservation are monitored. A top destination that every nature lover should see.
