This hotel is just excellent! Wonderful staff, great rooms, central location and a five star breakfast! We recommend a corner room with a view of the old town. In any case, the hotel is modern, rooms are top notch. But the best is the staff... we had a medical emergency during our stay. Staff took care of us and organized a really good doctor on a public holiday. They made it possible, so a really big THANKS to the hotel staff!

Compact city (old part) easy for walking. Sights are close to the train station. Enjoyed most walking along quaint cobblestone streets with ambient lighting (romantic). Beautifully restored gable-house style buildings. Plenty of helpful direction signs to sights. Enjoyed visiting and observing harbor activities. Eat freshly caught seafood at harbor. Nice walk along Wismarer Bay to Bad Wendorf (closest beach).

This is an old town in former east Germany.

This is an old town in former east Germany. It was a key port on the Hanseatic League. The Hanseatic League,[a] commonly called The Hansa, was a medieval commercial and defensive network of merchant guilds and market towns in Central and Northern Europe. Growing from Lübeck and a few other North German towns in the late 12th century, the League expanded between the 13th and 15th centuries and ultimately encompassed nearly 200 settlements across eight modern-day countries, ranging from what is now Estonia in the northeast to the Netherlands in the west, and extended inland as far south as Cologne, and Kraków, Poland. If you're interested in history this is a place to go.

One more comment about the Altstadt apartment: check-in is...

One more comment about the Altstadt apartment: check-in is not allowed until 4p.m. And you don't find that out til after you have paid. We had to while away an hour in a coffee shop, surrounded by our suitcases, as we had already arranged to arrive about 3, which has been the latest check-in time everywhere we've stayed before.

Fantastic town to visit, wonderful buildings and architecture, Beautiful and compact sea port with harbour tours and an amazing fish restaurant. Plenty of good restaurants but would highly recommend the restaurant 'Alte Schwede' in the market square. Several very large church buildings with amazing architecture. The town has a very interesting history which is reflected in buildings to be seen.

Enjoyed the harbour and the large cathedral.

Enjoyed the harbour and the large cathedral. Loved all the little shops and the seagulls. My daughter and granddaughter took the harbour trip. As I am unsteady on my feet I found the round cobblestones annoying but nearby was always a flat stone way. Also enjoyed the conversation with a gentleman at the tiny museum who was a member of the gang who played in Soko Wismar....a favorite of mine.

Experience brick Gothic cathedrals & old houses with nearby harbor & fresh fish. Don't miss the Maritime heritage centre at Alter Hafen (Old Harbor) - excellent English/German explanations of Hanseatic League, & ship form "cog". Outing to Island Poel is very relaxing -see the 800 yr old church! Short distances in Wismar -walk to your hotel from train station!

Interesting place in an old prison. In the small cells there is not much space (obviously - it is a prison cell!), but it is well designed. The atmosphere at this place is different than most other hotels. Quite an experience.
