Situated on the north coast of Spain, the seaside city of Santander is the capital of Cantabria. This beautiful city has it all; from stunning beaches and green gardens to captivating museums and a bustling city centre.

Overlooking the lighthouse of the Mauro Island, the popular sandy beach of Sardinero is divided by the gardens of Piquio. These magnificent gardens feature Canarian palm trees, blue eucalyptus and colourful flower beds.

Located on the Magdalena Peninsula, the imposing Palacio de la Magdalena has a neoclassic French and English style. Wander around the green gardens and visit the small zoo; home to penguins, seals and other sea animals.

The Cathedral of Santander is a historic landmark in the city centre. Built between the 12th and 14th century, this historic monument consists of two Gothic churches. The Alameda de Oviedo Boulevard is a shopping paradise where you can find everything you need.

    Review of Santander and Hotel Náutico Santander

    Review of Santander and Hotel Náutico Santander Our trip to Santander was perfect for our situation, as we were sailing from Plymouth to Santander and needed some accommodation to break up our journey before heading south. We found Santander to be a large and lively city with plenty to see and do. Although we only stayed overnight, we really enjoyed our brief visit. Hotel Náutico Santander was absolutely brilliant. The staff couldn’t have been more helpful – they assisted us in finding our way around the city and even told us about local attractions happening that day. We visited a historic museum, which happened to be free as it was a religious holiday in Santander. We’re definitely planning to return next year, and we’ll be staying at the same hotel again. Highly recommended!

    I only spent 1 day in town, but would love to come back.

    I only spent 1 day in town, but would love to come back. Went to Virgen del Mar for a concert at sunset: it was fantastic, don't miss the experience if you have this chance, don't worry about it being outside the town, local townhall normally finds a way, and if not, there is always the taxi option. Loved El Sardinero beach, the area of Magdalena and its castle, and the architecture.

    This is my hometown, and I want to retire here.

    This is my hometown, and I want to retire here. It is an amazing place with incredible beaches, excellent food and things to do and see nearby. However, it is also subject to gentrification and I am afraid this will spoil it.

    We loved being near the water.

    We loved being near the water. The harbour is beautiful with a wide promenade and you can walk a long way to beach or into city. Many of the buildings are lovely. Aside from the lovely hotel staff where we stayed we did find hospitality rather unfriendly. People serving us in bars/cafes/restaurants rarely cracked a smile. My husband was speaking Spanish to them or at least attempting to.

    It is and elegant and relaxed city with great tapas and dining culture. Where fish and seafood as well as meats are show cased. It is a sea oriented city with great views and tours of the bay offering lots of day trips to the surrounding areas.

    Beautiful beaches but you can see why this place hasn’t taken off as a tourist resort. No one speaks English. It’s not child friendly. Nothing opens until 9. Then everywhere that serves food closes at 3/4pm, then opens at 8pm again. It’s no good with young children.

    Le Petit Boutique Hotel is situated a few hundred yards from the Sardinero beach and within easy walking distance of the Casino and eating places. The rooms are themed on places around the world - we were in New York, on the first floor with patio doors. Fresh bottled water provided each day. The hotel team are charming, welcoming and helpful and the property is kept exceptionally clean. The breakfast was good, fresh fruits, breads and preserves.

    Lovely view of the beach. All staff at the hotel were very friendly and a good breakfast. The location was perfect for the beach. Bus stop very close to the hotel to go into the centre of Santander (€1.30) There are some great restaurants and bars near the hotel. The area prides itself for it's excellent food. Cheap flight from Birmingham with Ryan Air which took only 1 hour 40 min and a 25 min taxi journey, great for a long weekend away.

    Great location just next to the port so ideal for a nights stay before or after your ferry crossing. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. There is a restaurant in the hotel that was absolutely lovely and fantastic value including a bottle of wine in the cost of the meal. I will definitely use Hotel Bahia again when I use the ferry crossing into Santander.

    The staff were friendly and helpful and the hotel was clean and modern. The location is fantastic, overlooking the beach and a quick taxi ride to Santander city centre or a lovely walk along the coast. There is a good restaurant and small infinity pool.
