FAQs about hotels in Santiago de Compostela

A Valuable City with Rich History

The city of Santiago de Compostela is the capital of Galicia and the place where the Apostle St. James is buried. The city’s Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its distinguished old monuments around the Cathedral and the tomb of St. James.

Made of granite, the spectacular Baroque facade of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela features massive bell towers and statues of St. James. The Obradoiro facade of the Cathedral is one of the most exceptional examples of the Spanish Baroque period.

Surrounded by magnificent buildings, the monumental square of Plaza do Obradoiro is one of the most historic squares in the world and the heart of Santiago. You can stay in one of the hotels, guest houses or apartments Booking.com offers nearby this majestic square.

The final destination of the Medieval pilgrimage route (El Camino de Santiago), this city is the best place to enjoy fresh fish and traditional Galician bread. Galicia is the seafood capital of Spain and the right place to savor Salpicón de Mar (seafood salad) and Pulpo á Feira (octopus cooked with salt).

The Christian pilgrimage route of the Way of St. James passes by Santiago de Compostela Airport, which is 16 km away from Galicia’s capital.

The Cathedral is a must, as is one of the daily Mass sessions (I'm an atheist but still appreciate the architecture and the rituals). The cathedral roof-top walk is worth attending, with beautiful views. However, it is also worth noting that the guide explains everything in Spanish, which is a shame. They could provide earpieces which translate into your language of choice. Santiago is a very easy city to walk around. There are plenty of good restaurants & tapa bars. I had a great piece of Veal at The Steak House is worth visiting.

Well worth exploring.

Well worth exploring. Still busy in late October but not overcrowded. Would have been even better if we had arrived on foot having completed a compostela. We would probably consider it excessively busy had we visited in the summer when 5000+ walkers arrive each day.

We loved the location of this booking.

We loved the location of this booking. It was close to the cathedral, and restaurants. However, it was quiet enough to get a good night's sleep. There were several restaurants that were open early enough to get a yummy cafe con leche.

Great cathedral located in a beautiful square (or placa?).

Great cathedral located in a beautiful square (or placa?). Surrounding area to cathedral was engaging. Lovely shops and eateries. Pleasant atmosphere. Worth a visit particularly, of course, for camino walkers.

Is the finish of all the Camino walks, except the Finisterre and Muxia Camino walks, the only Camino walks that start at Santiago . So, as the Camino - Hub as such, it can get busy . But , has a rich history to explore and excellent facilities. A must do!

I went back to San Francisco Hotel Monumento in Santiago-...

I went back to San Francisco Hotel Monumento in Santiago-just finished my second Camino, crashed there three nights. Spot on for pilgrims: five minutes from the cathedral, but tucked in silence, no Plaza square racket. Walls feel ancient, like ghosts of old monks approving your blisters. First visit two years back? Huge room, plush bed, every plug and hair-dryer you need. This round, they stuck me in a shoebox-shower's leaky, tiles chipped, but hey, sleep was fine. Still worth it for the vibe!

This is a very nice little hotel close to the centre of the city, a short stroll away from the cathedral and well placed for and all the main tourist attractions. We stayed there twice, once at the start and again at the end of walking the Camino Frances. Breakfast is more generous than is the norm in Spain, including boiled eggs, meats, cheese, toast, croissant, orange juice and coffee or tea. The staff are very gentle, welcoming and pleasant. The rooms are small but good, both had excellent showers. We would definitely stay here again.

Clean, 2 large bedrooms, location is ok 10 mins walk from old town. Hotel staff booked me a cab which was great for when I left. Being out of old town can feel a bit more like actually being in Spain not in California which is a plus. Receptionists were very nice. I was therefore surprised and really disappointed that a simple email request I made the day I left was completely ignored by the hotel, I doubt it would have been ignored if I had been a more posh hotel customer (not one from the boon docks flat.

Absolutely fabulous property, a converted monastery, in a beautiful location, perfect for relaxing after a visit to Santiago. Wonderful rooms, ours was Mateo, excellent breakfast and fabulous three-course dinner served each evening at 9.30. The chef is a star, just the right amount of delicious food with excellent wines. A lovely pool in which to cool down after a busy day. I really cannot praise this highlight of our holiday in northern Spain enough. One of the best places we have ever stayed.

Lovely sweet receptionists. Location between the train station and old town and very near to airport bus stop. Quiet clean comfortable room. We stayed in two other different hotels in Santiago de Compostela, this is our best experience . Can leave luggage after check out.

I liked that this was a small hotel in a relatively quiet part of Santiago de Compostela's old town. Our attic room was clean, comfortable, and very spacious (it could easily fit 4-5 people). The skylights were also a great feature.
