Out of a Fairytale
Most visitors to Carcassonne come here for one thing: to see its fairytale, UNESCO World Heritage-listed castle sitting majestically on a hill east of the city.
Spectacularly lit at night, this Cité is a restored medieval fortress with 52 towers, 2 outer walls covering almost 2 miles, and a drawbridge providing access to a keep. Twice daily there are medieval jousting displays between the walls. This intriguing castle has enchanted so many that it has appeared in novels, films and even spawned a board game.
Some Carcassonne hotels, bars and restaurants can be found in the Cité but the majority are in the Ville Basse below. The stone Old Bridge, also lit at night, links it to the city centre over the Aude River.
Central Carcassonne also has its own sights including the fine art museum and the cathedral with its impressive stained-glass windows. But its best feature is the South of France way of life, with relaxed bars and pavement cafes, some serving the local speciality – cassoulet. Other slow-paced attractions include boat trips along the Canal du Midi and visiting villages like Minerve in the surrounding hills.
Served by national and low cost carriers, Carcassonne Airport is a mere 3 miles out of the city centre.

Though the weather wasn’t the best we found enough to see and do in the 4 days we were there. The castle was very impressive and we had a guided tour of it. The traffic wasn’t too bad and the drivers were very courteous. In fact the French in this city were friendlier than in more frequented areas like Nice or Cannes. While there we used a pub called The Celts and I would thoroughly recommend it. The visit to the castle was amazing inside and out. A short walk into the Bastide (New Cite) is lovely finding numerous cafes, shops and cathedrals. Some great go to opportunities! Useful to know that some restaurants close on a Wednesday so you can plan were to eat.Great contrast between the old and new cite.Our favourite place to eat lunch was Au Petit Brunch. Carcassonne is a beautiful city with lots of fabulous restaurants and lively bars as well as the historical epicentre inside the castle walls (Citè) itself which was my favourite part! We went as couples but there was alot of families there also both young children with options for them too. Lovely castle , restaurants bars and transport links are brilliant . Fantastic underground carparks , lovely canal , easy to walk around . We stayed in a hotel within the walls and that was lovely (Auberge des Lices) and we visited the old town as well as the city. So much to see and do! This was our second visit and we were not disappointed (other than the note below). A slight caveat as one of party was disabled is that the walled City is not particularly disabled friendly. Those who stay in the other lovely hotels are afforded luggage transfer but those less fortunate with mobilty have to struggle waith bags and have to be able to walk quite a few hundred metres to get to a gate other than the main entrance which is the nearest to the Cite car parks. A golf cart type facility would I am sure assist even if there was a charge... Just saying :-)Guest review byRichardUnited Kingdom
