We only went into town once during our stay but wished we'd made more time. A lovely town to walk about and some really interesting shops, could easily have spent more time here if we'd planned for it. All the shop owners we met were friendly and chatty and more than ready to offer directions or recommendations. Enjoyed an amazing pork and chilli sausage roll from a bakery there too. Our daughter particularly enjoyed exploring Swish & Flick to spend her pocket money - lots of Harry Potter merch but also Alchemy England, Nightmare before Christmas, Lilo and Stitch, crystals, gemstones etc.

Axminster was only a stop-over so saw very little of this historic town. It looked very interesting, meriting further exploration if we had had the time. But with all the amenities we needed at the time, like my wife's daily Times!

Even though I have a long ancestral history in Bridport and visited many times as a child, I had never been to Axminster. The only thing I knew about it was the carpet manufacturing. I therefore assumed it was rather 'industrial'. However, it is anything but and is absolutely charming. Axminster also has a beautiful station that could be straight out of 'Brief Encounter'. I didn't even know that its name derives from the river Ax and therefore it is the 'minster' town of the Ax river; which leads to the equally charming Axmouth. This latter town even has a tram. Why did we get rid of those and trolley busses?

There is not much going on in Axminster.

There is not much going on in Axminster. The centre was almost deserted with all the shops already closed at 5pm on a Saturday afternoon. It remained very quiet all Saturday night and Sunday morning with nothing open not even to buy a Sunday paper

Axminster is an ideal base for exploring Devon.

Axminster is an ideal base for exploring Devon. I chose to arrive by train and found it very easy to get to places on the train or bus. However, be aware that some of the local buses do not operate after 18:00. This really took me by surprise. Taxis are also limited. So, although the bus service at the train station provides some ideal areas for further exploration, always check that you can get back!

We wanted to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life and this is exactly what the place offers. It's quiet, secluded, green, full of beautiful birds; it's a 20 minute walk to Axminster where you can do groceries, and find a great bookshop, and nice restaurants, cafes, and pubs. From there you can also get a bus or a train and explore Devon and Dorset, which we did (the cliffs and the beaches are wonderful).

We were visiting my daughter in Axminster for three days and the accommodation was ideal. It was a lovely flat clean and comfortable everything was laid on for us. Of course it was self catering but shops are within walking distance and there was a cooker. Overall we had a lovely stay at a very good price and we will definitely book again when visiting.

The choice for breakfast is what you would get in a top class hotel. The whole place was beautiful. I’d definitely stay here again.
