FAQs about hotels in Chester

A Walk Through History

Featuring half-timbered buildings, almost complete city walls and a wealth of Roman heritage, beautiful Chester sits by the border with Wales.

The southernmost gate of the walls overlooks the River Dee, and the road leading north is one of 4 in the city to follow the original Roman roads. To the east, the Roman Gardens include a reconstructed underfloor heating system.

Nearby Grosvenor Park has remains of a stone Roman amphitheatre, thought to have been built on the world’s largest wooden amphitheatre at the time. Over the river in the suburb of Handbridge is a 2nd-century shrine to Minerva, and an informative display in the Grosvenor Museum provides the background to all this heritage.

In the west is Chester Racecourse and nearby are the medieval castle remains. More medieval buildings line the cobbled city centre streets. Some of these are The Rows, black-and-white timbered buildings housing 2 levels of shops. Other shopping options are the indoor market by the cathedral, and the Cheshire Oaks Outlet Village in Ellesmere Port to the north. The road out there passes Chester Zoo, one of the UK’s best zoos.

Booking.com’s range of Chester accommodation includes hotels with swimming pools, guest houses by the train station and B&Bs with parking near Chester Airport.

Excellent range of shops but I imagine it can be very crowded at times. We enjoyed walking the walls, walking by the river and visiting the cathedral. It is also in a good position to visit the seaside in North Wales

Chester is a lovely City with lots to see and do.

Chester is a lovely City with lots to see and do. We had 2 meals in town. The Salt House tapas meal was expensive for what it was and the pricing structure is very ambiguous. The menu pricing is not what you pay as they add 20% vat at the end and then a 10% service charge on top of that! So a £62 bill becomes £80. Not good. Food was tasty but not worth the charge. The Architect public house was lovely. It has been tastefully restored, the staff were very attentive, the food selection was good (something for all pockets) 8 draught real ales on tap, and the pricing was what it should have been. Great atmosphere. Had a lovely night here. Only issue was that there was a 3 year old child in the eating area at 8pm and was obviously very tired and started to wail (no place for a 3 year old on a school night, should be in bed - in my opinion of course). Adults do not want wailing children when they are trying to relax and have an £80 evening out - entitled parents.

Perfect place to visit for a short break, or a stopping off point if travelling further. Plenty of places to eat and drink, new and quirky places. Visit the Zoo, Cathedral, walk the City walls, highly recommended for all the family.

Lovely city. Worth a visit.

Lovely city. Worth a visit. The traffic planners need a review of their traffic infrastructure. Currently only motor vehicles are provided for. The north part of the city feels cut off from the centre by the ring road. Walkers and cyclists need traffic management options that suit them as well.

The hotel is within walking distance of Chester City Centre and the bus stop for Chester Zoo. The room was clean and spacious and the showers etc worked well. The four poster bed was very comfortable. Breakfast was more than adequate in quantity and quality - we especially liked the scrambled egg and smoked salmon. The coffee was excellent. This is a friendly, family run hotel and the service was excellent. The price was reasonable. We would certainly recommend to others and stay there again ourselves.

Very comfortable room and spotlessly clean. We stayed in a room to the rear of the building and it was very quiet which suited us. Tea and coffee facilities were available in the room, together with biscuits, crisps and a bottle of water which were much appreciated. Breakfast was a very short walk across the car park into the hotel building. Great choice and all food was great quality. Good coffee too. The location is also great as well as it only takes 15-20 to walk into Chester city centre.

Situated across the road from Chester train station, this historic hotel was absolutely fantastic. 10 mins walk from Chester city centre and close to amenities, it was perfect for us. On site restaurant, bar and quick meal areas were very welcome. Our room was so large and comfortable.
