Colchester Castle and Museum absolutely brilliant especially for children. We went on a Sunday morning and found cheap parking near Castle Park but can imagine that it would be a nightmare to drive around Colchester on a weekday without entering bus lanes and one way systems!

Colchester is an excellent base for travelling the neighbouring places of interest. I stayed there for the history of the city and there is plenty to see. City centre in 21st century isn't great.

Alvento are very polite in their communication and when you call the help line and have properties in 27 locations in the UK ! The house itself was OK , but I was not impressed with the sparsity of equipment in the property, nor the service provided by the property host , I will only be leaving a 1 star review , and that is for the charming dressing table and stool in the master bedroom ,

We coincided with Oktoberfest weekend at the castle.

We coincided with Oktoberfest weekend at the castle. A major annual event. Even ended up in the pub with everyone late in the evening, which was entertaining and good-natured. We walked around town earlier during the day and found great places to stop off and to eat… Recommend Colchester for a weekend visit

We only stayed overnight in Colchester and left round lunchtime, so didnt have much time to browse, but we went to a few places and walked round the park! We will come back again and visit the castle. The area around there looks beautiful, too!

The hotel's location is great for a city break to Colchester to explore the historic town. The area has some good restaurants, independent cafes and retail therapy e.g. Fenwick upmarket department store. The hotel staff were professional and very helpful, being able to provide local knowledge, and practicalities like closing a stuck bedroom window. The continental breakfast was good with a fair amount of choice. Free and secure on-site parking was a big plus too, with the solid entrance gates being shut from 9pm nightly.

Nicely located on Colchester High Street within walking distance of most nearby amenities. Bed decently comfortable, plug sockets by the bed, and of course free Wi-Fi. Staff were very polite and friendly, and the service was very efficient. I slept very well and was easily able to walk to Castle Park, local restaurants and shops, and Colchester Town train station from the hotel. I wouldn't bother with the breakfast, as you have many options on the High Street and nearby, within spitting distance, for much cheaper.

Great location for exploring Colchester centre. If you don't like noise, best not to pick a hotel on the high street, especially at the weekend. Breakfast couldn't be faulted, following a rest in a very comfy bed. Staff were amazing. Needed a new fan for the room and this was dealt with immediately. Their Sister hotel The George, where you book in and can have breakfast, looked well kept and clean.

This was our second stay at Greyfriars, in itself an endorsement. The hotel has high standards in service, decor, cleanlness and comfort. (Breakfasts are good.) Its location is also good - easy to access by car and virually in the centre of Colchester. If we visit Colchester again, we shall certainly stay rhere.
