The hotel was well placed for ease of access to all tourist sights and amenities ie castle, cathedral, shopping, cafes and restaurants as well as local transport. This beautiful building has kept and perhaps enhanced it's original grandeur. My room was very comfortable, spotlessly clean and all facilities within well catered for. Breakfast was a plentiful affair ,well presented and a full selection to satisfy everyone. I dined one evening in the PMW restaurant and thoroughly enjoyed every mouthful of my meal. The staff in all areas also deserve a special mention who were all extremely friendly and professional

FAQs about hotels in Durham

Sacred English Heritage

Durham could definitely be one of those towns that appear in fairy tales and stories of kings and knights. Lying on a hilled peninsula formed by the Wear River, the striking cathedral overlooks from the hilltop, surrounded by the castle, palaces and historic buildings. Get transported back in time by the magic of this English jewel, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Though archaeological evidence suggests the area has been inhabited since 2000 BC, the present-day settlement was founded by monks from Lindisfarne in 995, choosing the area as the final resting place of Saint Cuthbert. Symeon of Durham stated once that ‘to see Durham is to see the English Zion, and by doing so one may save oneself a trip to Jerusalem’. Hotels and B&Bs in Durham’s historic centre are a popular choice to enjoy this historic legacy.

Its powerful religious position granted such great honour to the city, that the bishop still holds the rights to a seat in the House of Lords, and to accompany the sovereign at the coronation. During the 19th century and encompassing the industrial revolution, the university was founded, with Durham Castle becoming its first college.

Whether you’re searching for a cottage, a modern hotel, or a cheap hostel, Booking.com offers a wide range of accommodation in the area.

Lovely city, very compact so easy to get around with beautiful walks along the riverside, stunning Cathedral (an absolute must for a visit), cosy coffee shops and some super book shops. Check out the Durham Covered Market under/behind the Town Hall - an absolute treat and quite the Aladdin's cave!

Durham City was a great place to visit.

Durham City was a great place to visit. You can spend half a day in the Cathedral, the rest of the time wandering around the city and river, stopping to eat and drink in the great pubs. If you want to get further afield, drive to Beamish Museum, go up onto the Pennines, Visit Kielder Forest, go the coast (Lindisfarne is worth a visit), Whitby isn't that far away and the drive over the moors is great.

Much of the city is geared towards students but we found at least two good restaurants - the Turkish one and the Italian above it. Beamish was well worth the visit. The first day, we could not gain access to the cathedral because it was matriculation day for the university - but well worth going the second day. Unfortunately, access to the castle is limited to going with a tour on certain days, since it is also a living university college.

Our host was attentive and thoughtful, the house was clean and very comfy with great heating and lots of hot water - very easy to park outside and just 10 mins to Durham. Great value for 4 people and we were easily able to go to Durham for the morning and afternoon, pop back to relax for an hour or so then head back to the city as the apartment was so close to the city centre - bigger than a hotel room would have been for a family of 4 and really quite perfect for us.

It was a great room for my daughter and me to stay for a night before visiting Durham University for the open day. The staff was lovely, helpful, and very welcoming. There is a cafe and food at the hotel, but also McDonald's as an option, within walking distance from the hotel (2 min). It is near the main road but very quiet and relaxing.
