Sophisticated Victorian Spa Town
The elegant spa town of Harrogate has some of England’s finest Victorian architecture. Lush greenery and colourful flowers also add to the stately atmosphere.
The main attraction is the Turkish Baths and Health Spa, in a 19th-century building which maintains its original Moorish interior design. Nearby is the Royal Pump Room Museum, set over Europe’s strongest sulphur well and detailing the town’s history.
One ongoing Harrogate institution is Bettys Tea Rooms which serves fabulous afternoon tea. Surrounded by the unique shops of the Montpellier Quarter, it overlooks gardens which continue south to meet The Stray – over 200 acres of parkland whose vibrant spring blossom is quite a sight. On the opposite side of town are the Grade II-listed Valley Gardens, whose bandstand hosts summer concerts. The gardens merge into a pine wood which neighbours the acclaimed RHS Harlow Carr Gardens.
Aside from its visual beauty, the town is also important for conferences. Harrogate International Centre is one of the UK’s top convention venues - just one of the reasons why the accommodation industry here is thriving.
Options on Booking.com include 5-star hotels with spas, cheap apartments near the train station, and guest houses with parking. The nearest airport is Leeds Bradford Airport to the south.

Lovely, independent shops - 'Hats on top', (bought 3 hats!), cheese shop - wide variety of local produce, york soap company - so inventive. Great coffee shops and tea rooms - Mama Doreen's Emporium - great decor, the iconic Betty's - pricey but worth it, definitely book in advance. Wide choice of interesting restaurants Lilypad -outstanding for unusual and delicious food and interesting craft beers and cocktails, Drum and Monkey - great for fish. The Pump House Museum was interesting and well thought out. We missed out on the walking tour of Harrogate. The open doors day at the Royal Hall was interesting. Harrogate is lovely - plenty of shops - little boutiques and a variety of Restaurants and Bars - we stayed for one night and went to Bettys Tea Rooms for Afternoon tea - Nightlife is quieter than most towns but there are bars which cater for all tastes and ones that stay open late - we went to the Blues Cafe Bar which has Live Music 7 x day per week. Enjoyed a lovely walk in Valley Road Park and in Harlow Carr - beautiful gardens and public facilities. The public flower beds were impressive. Lovely shops, restaurants, cinemas, etc. Unfortunately, there were more empty shop spaces than I expected in such a well-known tourist spot. Some business owners were saying that they were closing or moving elsewhere because of very high rent and rates being enforced. Maybe local council and property owners need to have a re-think!! Harrogate is a lovely place to visit.A good selection of shops and eateries, everywhere is clean and people seem very helpful and nice to talk to.Always enjoy a trip to Harrogate. Worth visiting Harrogate for a couple of nights. Lovely gardens and history. Ideal to stop weekend and go onto York. Theatre worth visiting. Loops around hard to get lost. Great places to eat and lovely town. Pump house museum interesting. Piano Italian delicious. Delightful roast dinner at William and Victoria. Fat Badger worth a visit for drinks.
