What guests said about Merthyr Tydfil:

Merthyr itself is a bit of a depressing town.

Merthyr itself is a bit of a depressing town. Lots of empty shops. A nice restaurant near the train station, Casa Bianca. A good shopping centre just outside the main town with a big M&S, a big Boots, Next, TK Max, etc. Merthyr has good roads and it's easy to get to Brecon, Swansea and Cardiff from there.

It's a perfect melt of old and new.

It's a perfect melt of old and new. You just need to know where to look. Extreme choice of eating places. Ancient buildings, countryside and town all within walkable distance of each other. And all the roadworks are finished.....note...our sat nav got confused, all roundabouts are bypassed so don't miss the slip road you need!

Merthyr is my home town but I moved away 45 years ago for work purposes. It is steeped in history and played a major part in the industrial revolution. Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park is neardby. Within easy reach are Cardiff, Swansea, Abergavenny and so on, so a great base to work from. If you are into mountain biking Bike Park Wales is based on the outskirts of Merthyr.

Great access to the Brecon Beacons and Zip World which was the purpose of our visit. But now we’ve been we’d love to have had more time to explore. Hong Shan has wonderful Chinese food and great customer service.

Lovely town, just not much going on in the town itself.

Lovely town, just not much going on in the town itself. However managed to find a quirky spot for brunch. All the locals seem very helpful and friendly. Easy to trace in and out by car. Definitely would stay again

Ideal for exploring the Brecon Beacons and Dark Sky Wales, though cloud cover proved a problem for ourselves. Can recommend CyFarthfa Castle Museum and Art Gallery and also The Crown Inn with excellent Portuguese Restaurant.

Poor - What previous guests thought, 44 reviews
Absolutely nothing. Worst place ever!! Marketing photos are very carefully posed to make room look acceptable, but entire place is a total disgrace. Entry via rubble-strewn back alley. Poorly done conversion from one small flat above shops into 3 very cramped separate rooms. Cheap plasterboard walls. Shoddily painted. A poorly-planned space, constructed by untalented amateurs.

Is the hotel 5*? No- hit it’s 5* for providing clean, comfortable, modern accommodation, good space, great bathroom and shower and fluffy towels. Which was perfect for our overnight by the Brecon Beacons. Oh, and it’s 2 mins up the High Street to Davs Kitchen- recommend for a post-hike dinner- and Greggs that opens at 7am to get you going for the next day.

Stayed here whilst riding at Bike Park Wales - location of house is great for this - approx 10 minutes drive. Parking was easy in the road. Spacious lounge/diner, kitchen decent size as were the main 2 bedrooms and bathroom. Area seems quiet at night.

It was a perfect place to stay at whilst we enjoyed the slopes at Bike Park Wales. There was even a safe bike storage outside. Everything was comfortable and spacious and we thoroughly enjoyed staying there.

Loads of space and great value for money. The location is superb for day trips hiking around Brecon Beacons and the accommodation itself is perfect for a holiday in Wales with friends.
