Tain is a lovely quiet place to stay in but i did not like the restaurant at the Station. Overpriced basic food which i would not go back for. Quiet area with several options for food and drink. Platform 1867 a fun restaurant with good food, friendly staff and lovely outside area. Plenty of shops and petrol stations. I used Tain as a base for a golf holiday in the Highlands.
I used Tain as a base for a golf holiday in the Highlands. Although I did not play Tain Golf Club which is basically next to the hotel, it was convenient for rounds at Brora, Golspie, Royal Dornoch and Fortrose & Rosemarkie, within about a 45 minute drive of all four. Tain itself is a nice village with good restaurants and shopping which I took advantage of when my clubs were not in use. When we travelled north to Thurso, then to Okney, we stopped in Tain at a very nice grocery. After Okney and northern Scotland, we had to head back to Edinburgh. Thurso was too far to drive to Edinburgh, and since we were returning from Orkney by ferry. It was too far to drive down to Inverness. But staying in Tain was just right. We arrived in Edinburgh early in the afternoon, feeling refreshed.
