So many things, and it was little touches also, like a slow close toilet seat, divider in the bin for general and recycling, a massive tv and a beautiful tub, I'm only sorry we didn't get to enjoy it for that long as we had quite a late arrival and we were heading to an activity early the next day but we had dinner and breakfast there and it was gorgeous.

We were so impressed with this lovely pub! The rooms really exceeded our expectations. They were gorgeous with such attention to detail and the beds were like sinking into a cloud of crisp white sheets. The staff were friendly and helpful. We’ll certainly go back!

We stayed for just one night but thoroughly enjoyed both our stay and the beautiful city. The experience was very pleasant — the staff were warm and welcoming, everything was clean and comfortable, and the food was absolutely delicious. Stepping outside, we found ourselves right in the heart of stunning Winchester. The cathedral is just across the street, set on a charming square lined with linden trees. A short stay, but truly memorable

We came as a family of which part were going to the Goodwood Festival of Speed. We were welcomed and given keys to our four rooms immediately. Two in the old part of the hotel and two in the modern block at the back. The rooms were full of character, charm, clean, quite spacious and had everything needed. We ate dinner one evening and the food was excellent. Special mention to the Bar Manager who went above and beyond to make sure we had a great time. He kept checking on us and arranged the lounge area so we could all sit together and chat. Always cheerful and attentive.

If you are visiting for food and shopping stick to the main high street. If you want history and nature be sure to wander to the cathedral, and beyond to the College and the river path, the water meadows, and the Great Hall. The side streets are beautiful.

Winchester’s history, the Cathedral has to be right up there, it was incredible and would definitely go back, there were some beautiful walks nearby, along the river Itchen, and very clean. It’s very easy getting around, the train station is minutes away( 7 minutes to the airport 😉) So many pkaces to eat, The Vine did an amazing veggie breakfast and loved the Royal Oak pub, oldest in England.

Some towns and cities in England are only historic in the sense that a thoughtful (or shamefaced) Council has preserved a few remnants of the past among the concrete, steel and glass of modernity. Winchester however is among the honoured ones where history outweighs the contemporary. It is impossible to miss the past even on the shortest of walks in the city centre - across the road from the newish retail centre are house walls containing Anglo Saxon and Norman stone carvings as an example. Winchester is justly proud of its history from ancient Britons through being a Roman settlement to Alfred setting the capital of his hard won battles for supremacy over the Vikings in Winchester to the later Norman conquest establishing the castle and cathedral and the presence of monarchy right through to the 1800s. Winchester, it has to be said is one of my favourite English cities - I keep returning for the simple reason of its consciousness about its historical focus. It is a city that behaves more like a small countryside market town and long may that image remain

Of course the Cathedral was the highlight.

Of course the Cathedral was the highlight. We attended two Evensong services which were amazing. The map of Winchester from the information office was rather confusing with lots of people we talked to agreeing that 'it might have been printed up-side-down!

The hotel "prison" theme gave the hotel a really great atmosphere. The rooms were absolutely fine - clean and well looked after. The breakfast was was excellent - a good choice and freshly made. The location to central Winchester was absolutely perfect - a scenic 5 minute walk into the city along the river bank. The adjoining pub was also great. The owner made us feel so very welcome and went out of her way to ensure we had a lovely stay in the city.

Ideal location for exploring Winchester. Staff very accommodating, friendly and helpful. Our room although clean was tired and in need of a makeover, especially the bathroom. We had dinner in the restaurant and the food we had was excellent. Beds are extremely comfy. A very quiet hotel. There is a Spa available too. Barrier controlled car park and CCTV.
