FAQs about hotels in York

England Through the Ages

Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once gave access to the city.

Walk the walls for wonderful views of the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.

A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even try out archaeology for yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.

Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around a 30-minute drive away, Castle Howard is a stately home on an over 1,000-acre estate.

Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there's a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guesthouses in York and on the outskirts available on Booking.com.

Yortk has a very small historic area and at best is a day and one night visit. We did not visit the Minister as the £40 entrance fee put us off. We did do a witches tour which was enjoyable and tells you everything about York, I would reccomend this. The Viking Centre was an amazing visitor centre, cleverly done and very informative. The city itself is ok but not one to rave about and would only reccommend a shor stay. We did visit Beverly which is a lovely vibarant market town with a HUGE minister, this is worth a visit, its free, the staff are so friendly and cannot do enough to help you, a great little town.

After two full days we still didn’t know our way around the streets of York BUT the additional tourist maps and directions at every corner were a PLUS and we used them at every opportunity!! The city walls were safe and passable and gave an opportunity for some wonderful views you would not have seen down below. The tourist ‘hop on hop off’ bus was superb and prompted us to spend some time in Bishopthorpe Road High Street where we browsed and there was a nice choice of eateries … we chose the wine bar for soft drinks and a shared cheese board; FAB! Our two days were just right to explore a new city and a taster for when we return!

It is a thriving, buzzing city.

It is a thriving, buzzing city. The railway museum is a long walk from the centre. We sat in the Minster for sometime listening to a music rehearsal which was lovely. We found a Greek restaurant in the centre which was excellent.

We walked the wall and spent most of our time in the old town. Safe, friendly and lots of good places to eat. Viking tour was super. Plexiglass you can walk over where they have excavated. Ran out of time ,but would have liked to gone the train museum. We will visit again and spend some more time. Really enjoyed it.

Plenty of car free streets and the City Centre still busy with tourists . York is a great place to visit and there is so much to do. We have stayed at the Camping and Motorhome Club site several times but that site has now become so expensive we NOW prefer to book Hotels. Our favourite is The Moxy Hotel which is very central .

Amazing hotel absolutely loved it. Prime location in York city centre. Stayed in the librarium room and felt as if I was transported back in time. The atmosphere in the hotel is something special. The entrance is by code and I preferred this. Enchanted music playing in the hallway added a nice touch when walking to room. Just fantastic .

The hotel was in a great location, just a short walk to the city centre. The room had a view of York Minster from the window. The room was spotless and beautifully decorated and the beds were very comfortable. The staff was very welcoming and were very knowledgable about the city with recommendations of where to go and directions.

A friendly welcome from the reception staff. The hotel is ideally situated for a short walk into York City Centre. Our room was clean & comfortable. We especially enjoyed sitting in the lounge watching the world go by on the river. Parking is secure & reasonably priced for York.
