FAQs about hotels in Athens

Dynamic City With 3400 Years of History

With the Acropolis as the jewel in the archaeological crown of Athens, this city is full of history while embracing the future. Take a stroll back in time through the neoclassical streets of the Plaka, where you'll find tavernas serving tantalizing souvlaki and mousaka, street vendors and live entertainment.

A trip to the Parthenon and the Agora top most lists and can also be appreciated from a distance by walking along the Dionysiou Aeropagitou street, which is away from the busy crowds of the city center.

The changing of the guard occurs every hour on the famous Syntagma Square. From here, Ermou Street provides shopaholics with a fashionable retail sanctuary. The upscale districts Kolonaki and Kifisia are also bursting with fancy boutiques, galleries and bars.

Athens has some of the finest museums in the world, such as the National Archaeological, Acropolis and Benaki Museums. From Athens International Airport to the Port of Piraeus, this is a city bustling with the old and new. On Booking.com you can find everything from modern hotels to a room in a classical building.

We always felt safe in the city.

We always felt safe in the city. Way too much graffiti but in general the streets were pretty tidy and clean. Most attractions were easy to access and catered very well for tourists. We enjoyed our stay here.

It's a must to walk up to the Arocoplis.

It's a must to walk up to the Arocoplis. Plaka was okay, Been in better cobble stone alleys wth Shops, didn't feel lots to see, of course its not Rome! and I walked all around. Barcelona, Venice nicer. It is easy to see Athens sights, do a hop on hop off or City tour. Yes, some buildings very run down, this surprised me in Greece

The sites are worth visiting, and some are well-preserved.

The sites are worth visiting, and some are well-preserved. Not all sites are worth the trip; some are just plain ruins of ruins. The Metro is a great way to get around and quite cheap. Otherwise, Athens as a city is not clean, badly kept, has dangerous pavements, many dodgy neighbourhoods even on the main streets, and locals are not always welcoming to tourists. There is a general sense of being charged more just because you are not local - even at a simple bakery!

Wonderful Graffiti and artwork on so many streets and buildings such as colourful outpouring of political faith in change. Easy to get around the City walking quite dangerous as unexpected uneven paving and potholes. No sound in the morning of birdsong, children playing absolute silence except for passing traffic, occasional church bell and distant emergency services siren. No joy de vivre or la dolce vita. Felt quite lonely and disturbing.

Athens is truly a city that captivates the heart and mind!

Athens is truly a city that captivates the heart and mind! From the moment we arrived, the rich history and vibrant culture enveloped us. Exploring iconic sites like the Acropolis and the Parthenon was a dream come true. The breathtaking views from these ancient landmarks are unforgettable. We found the local cuisine to be a highlight of our trip. Dining at traditional tavernas, we indulged in delicious dishes like moussaka, souvlaki, and fresh seafood. Each meal was an opportunity to savor the flavors of Greece, often accompanied by warm hospitality from the locals. One of our favorite experiences was wandering through the charming neighborhoods of Plaka and Monastiraki, filled with unique shops and bustling markets. The blend of ancient ruins with modern life creates an electric atmosphere that's hard to resist. We thoroughly enjoyed spending time in Athens and would recommend staying for at least five days. This allows enough time to soak in the history, enjoy the local culture.

Lovely hotel in a fantastic position in the heart of the Plaka district. Less than 10min walk from Monastiraki Square and train station which links direct to Athens airport. Staff really friendly and helpful and a really nice breakfast provided. Has definitely one of the best rooftop bars in Athens for views of the acropolis and sunsets. Reasonable prices as well. (Opens 6pm) Non guests welcome. Loads of bars and restaurants nearby.

Such a creative hotel, unlike anything we’ve seen before in Greece! The building itself is gorgeous, with beautiful architecture and thoughtful details. There’s a coffee shop right next to the lobby with fun, creative swag. The room had an industrial vibe and was very quiet. The staff were incredibly sweet and helpful with everything we needed. We travel to Athens often, and we’ll definitely be back!

I stayed at Alva Athens Hotel for 1 night during my first trip to Greece, and I honestly didn’t want to leave. The staff treated me like family—warm, helpful, and genuinely caring. The room was beautifully decorated, had a calming color palette, and the bed was heaven. I especially appreciated the fresh towels and spotless cleanliness. It’s rare to find such consistency in service.
