The town is just the right size — not too big.
The town is just the right size — not too big. Its rural and local character really comes through; we even watched goat herders at work just nearby. There’s a good variety of restaurants and several shops. For those with limited mobility, there’s a convenient flat sidewalk running along the beach. If you’re willing to drive a short distance, there are plenty of stunning beaches to choose from depending on the wind direction. It’s an excellent location for beach life and all kinds of water activities. At Paralia Souda, there was also an aid for wheelchair users to get into the water — provided they’re able to transfer into the seat. There’s also lots to do nearby — one tip is to hike up to Saint Paisios Church or visit the nearby mountain villages with their amazing views towards Plakias (see the photo).Guest review byJussiFinland - 10

A very good base for very many superb beaches in southern Crete, with a nice beach within the town, some great shops and very good eating options both within the town and the surrounding villages. Plakias is a small town, out of the way and just what we like. Reminiscent of Katelios on Kefalonia but a much bigger beach, with a quite well catered for naturist section at the southern end with two sunbeds and a parasol for EUR 9 per day or space to bring your own. The central to northern beach is mostly sunbed city but in this case the sand and sun are so hot you really need them. In late August, the sea was mostly calm but the wind can get up and waves got fairly strong at times. I visited the beach bar daily for liquid refreshment and the local beer mamos is perfect and EUR 5 for 500ml(?) seemed fair at this remote location. There is a small section of shops, bars and restaurants at the north end f town. We particularly liked Sofia's restaurant due to it's shorefront location, but we had nice meals elsewhere too. The area round the shops has been prettied up with a colourful fountain that children enjoyed playing in. Although hilly and winding roads dominate the whole region, the main street through town is a steady incline and no problem for most people. Plakias has a very pleasant beach-side walkway, good restaurants close to the beach,, a choice of supermarkets if needed, and a variety of hotels/resorts to suit different budgets. There is also the option of a naturist beach at the eastern end, and various boat or coach excursions are possible. It needs a proper bus station, instead of a patch of waste ground with no facilities as at present. A few years ago there was at least a kiosk from which tickets could be bought and timetable information was available. There are plenty of places offering food and drink. We particularly liked Veranda, Ostrako, Sweet Creations and of course we had to visit Takis at Muses who genuinely remembered us from our previous visit 3 years before! Kri Kri, Kyma and Gialos also worth a visit. We did not have enough days to try all of the others! From traditional to modern. A very friendly place. A nice long level promenade which is an easy walk and which has been nicely paved. A long beach but is more shingle than sand. At the far end of the beach you can take the side roads and walk uphill if you need a bit more of a stretch. These connect back to the town. Beach bars and sun beds along the length of the beach but do not clutter it. Short drives to Souda Beach and to Dimnoni and Ammoudi Beaches - you have to have to have lunch at Chyma Sto Kyma at Ammoudi! It can sometimes be very windy on Crete and Plakias is no exception. Sometimes the drains can whiff a bit but you just move on! There are not many things specifically for children to do but highly recommend a visit.Guest review byKayUnited Kingdom - 8.0

Owners were around and super helpful, while also very discrete. We were 4 adults and 2 kids. We stayed in villa no 3 with 3 bedrooms and it was perfect size for us. The bedrooms upstairs with ensuite bathrooms are stunning. Change of towels and extra towels for pool was also a big plus. Everything you want on hand and the family very helpful and friendly. Right next to the beach with an easy walk to the town. Breakfast and dinner buffets were included, the food was good with lots to choose from and the restaurant staff were wonderful!
