Unfortunately due to an underlying medical condition I fainted a couple times in the hotel lobby during the IGM afters, and the staff were nothing but brilliant, not only did they help my friends and make sure i was okay but they allowed us to sit in their break room, got me a juice with glucose and even cooked me a pizza to eat free of charge to help me regain some strength. They also then helped me and my friends back to our room and were genuinely lovely. It was really really appreciated, and although i unfortunately can not remember the specific staff members that helped, all the staff i interacted with in general were very, very lovely. The hotel itself is also great and has lovely rooms!

The host was very opening, welcoming and an absolute joy to interact with. The parking was nice. We left too early to eat an actual breakfast, but the host was up at 0530 and made us coffee, insisted we get food from what was available and gave my wife one of her personal spoons for a yogurt to go. She was beyond gracious and just an absolute joy. The room was beautiful and comfortable. It was private and easily accessible. The shower had the best combination of temperature control and water pressure of any stay we had in Scotland and that includes 5 star hotels.

Bettystown has a fabulous beach ideal for nice long walks, there's also some nice coffee shops in the area but there is not much else to do there. There are good bus and rail connections, with shuttle buses to and from the train station in Laytown and the main bus station in Drogheda. A car would also be helpful to explore neighboring areas, and a little further a field.

Nothing about Bettystown which is a pleasant place to stay...

Nothing about Bettystown which is a pleasant place to stay for a couple of days. But a warning for travellers to the Cherbourg or Holyhead ferries concerning the toll roads around Dublin. It's complicated! The M50 is a toll motorway that acts as a ring road from south of Dublin to north of Dublin, including a spur from the junction with the M1 into Dublin port where the ferries are based. Part of it is a toll road but the toll element is only between Junctions 6 and 7 to the west of Dublin and do not figure in the trip from Bettystown. This is, however quite difficult to work out to a person of normal intelligence such as myself and is also not stated explicitly on the website in a manner that is user-friendly. (The problem is alsocompounded by the fact that there are no toll barriers - payment is prompted by ANPR cameras. This makes it difficult for foreigners to pay any toll charges, but the informed traveller will have done his reseacrh and figured this for himself). Having wrongly assumed I would have to pay a toll I phoned the number on the website the day before and gave my details to a friendly but rather bemused operative and then further assumed a trouble-free journey to the ferryport. Alas I had got it wrong. I had not realised that the M50 section from the M1 junction into the ferryport was part of a different toll scheme, that of the Dublin Port Tunnel. We duly passed through the tunnel and arrived at a toll booth where I was stung for €3,50. Fortunately I had the cash to hand and even more fortunately there was a real person in the toll booth and not an ANPR camera. Had it been camera only I would not have known that I needed to pay and would have been stung with a hefty fine. This happened to me in Portugal some years ago so I'm always alert for camera-only schemes but this one caused a lot of confusion.

Since we only spent our last day there, I can't say much, but from my perspective, it's not a very inviting city for tourism. I think that, by Irish standards, very little is being done to maintain the houses.

Bettystown is a completely unremarkable little town whose only redeeming feature is its direct beachfront location. However, it's ideal as a base for exploring the coast, the hinterland, or Dublin. There's plenty to discover and see in the surrounding area.
