Didn't feel ripped off, prices were reasonable. The sites were as good as if not better than Venice minus the canals and crowds. Ducal palace and Te palace were amazing not just for the artwork but for the incredible decorated ceilings and walls. Lake tour is well worth doing. Mantegnas house disappointing. It is an easy town to walk around and see everything. The Duomo and of course the Basilica are stunning but also the very old circular church. Virgil’s birthplace well remembered, and the setting for Rigoletto, this place was made by successive ducal dynasties especially the great builder the Gonzagas. Was not expecting such an amazing beautiful and cultural city. The old City is beautiful with a range of churches, palazzos, squares and buildings. Palazzo Te and Palazzo Ducale both worth visits - allow about 2 hours for each. Mantova Card is good value for these two alone - but includes 18 different attractions and museums over a three day period, including some sites in nearby Sabbioneta. Supermarket a few minutes’ walk away, and a fairly short walk to the centre of town too. Great to have a parking place within the gated parking area for anyone coming by car. Really comfortable flat with two spacious bedrooms and useful to have a washing machine! Our host was helpful and responsive. Mantova is lovely. Even though there is a small stairway area there was an elevator which was appreciated after a long bike ride to Mantova.
