The bathroom was spacious. The room had a nice view of the mountain. There's a restaurant and a souvenir store on the first floor. There is a microwave and toaster oven available for use. My room had a refrigerator so I could store food and drink.

Located in central Naze the apartment is close to everything. Parking is just around the corner and a great sushi shop 20m away( Edo Mae sushi) Room is self check-in but there was a helpful staff on site when we arrived. Spacious modern room with large shower and own toilet. Our room was adjacent to the road but not too noisy. Comfortable queen-size mattress on floor with large TV.. Reasonably priced.

Cheap and cheerful. Lovely staff. Tiny room but it's at a great location to get the A-Line ferry that leaves early in the morning and the ferry terminal is a literal stones throw away.

Amami-Oshima is a stunning island and so far (mostly)...

Amami-Oshima is a stunning island and so far (mostly) unheard off by foreign tourists and 'off the beaten track'. There are frequent daily ferries/ships to surrounding islands and on to Kagoshima. If you visit Amami a rental car is a MUST to easily explore the island as any public transport is basically just non-existent, totally infrequent or just very limited geographically. I would suggest no less than 3 full days to explore Amami but 5 would be perfect.

People mostly go to Okinawa looking for amazing beaches, while Amami, that is closer, is still not well-known to non-Japanese people. It is reachable either by flight or by a night ferry from Kagoshima. In Amami you can experience a non-touristy holiday while enjoying nature and stunning beaches. Finding someone speaking English is not easy, as they’re are not so used to having western visitors. However, they’re so friendly that despite any language barriers they will try to engage a conversation with you and help you if needed. A must in your Japan trip!

It was better than I expected!

It was better than I expected! I thought it would be a smaller island, but it was bigger than I imagined and a fascinating island with many different faces. This time I stayed in Tatsugo Town. The waves were calm and there were few people, so I was able to spend a very luxurious time. It's no wonder there are so many immigrants! Depending on the purpose of your trip, you may find the lack of convenience stores, supermarkets, souvenir shops, etc. inconvenient, or you may find the simplicity to be great, but I definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a digital detox as a retreat!

There's a wide variety of restaurants, and they're all great. The eel is tasty and cheap. The freshly baked bakery is great. There are plenty of cheap takoyaki places. The soba restaurants that are open until late at night are also good. The conveyor belt sushi is also good. The tuna bowl at the Japanese restaurant is good. The tandoori chicken and curry are great. The wild boar gratin and saute at the casual French restaurant were delicious and not too strong. The wild boar liver and heart I tried for the first time at a local restaurant were also good. The rich goat soup was great!!! I'll be back!

There are lots of delicious restaurants and beautiful scenery. The people are kind. This was my second visit to Amami Oshima, but I still haven't seen everything, so I'd like to go again. Next time, I'd like to go to Kakeroma Island as well. I think it would be convenient to reserve a rental car near the airport for transportation. [Delicious food] ・Chicken sashimi and chicken rice from Hisakura ・Sushi Manten ・Tetchan's yakitori ・Sumiya's yakitori ・Ganzata and brown sugar banana chips bought at the supermarket ・Soy milk mochi and yam tofu from Shima Tofuya

It has a simple atmosphere reminiscent of the Showa era, and the walking speed and traffic flow are slow, which is nice. Because it's a remote island, it feels like shipping costs are generally added to product prices, but I think that's to be expected. One of the great things about Amami City is that it lets you notice things like that. A small part of the city is lively, with many friendly bars and a pleasant atmosphere that takes you back to the Showa era. This was my first trip to Amami City since retiring at age 60, so it was a great success. I really liked this less-developed city, and I'd like to return to reset my mind. Next time, I'd like to go south and explore Kakeroma Island.
