The 8km trail from Magome was great and there were buses going from the station to take you to the start of that short trail. On the return you could either walk to the train station a short walk from Tsumago or catch a bus back to Magome then another back to Nakatsugawa station. Lots of options and times. A beautiful and picturesque walk.

We arrived here after our first four nights in Tokyo and welcomed the peacefulness and pace of the town. We walked two legs of the Nakasendo Way using Nakatsugawa as our base: one leg walking from Nakatsugawa to Magome and the other bussing to Magome and walking to Tsumago from there and then returning to Nakatsugawa to our delightful guest house. Everyone we met here was helpful and kind. .

We planned to do the Nakasendo Trail.

We planned to do the Nakasendo Trail. We took a train to Nagiso and walked the 23kms back on the trail. Easy to follow trail and relatively quiet out of the main villages. Note! IC card doesn’t work. Buy a separate ticket for the trip. We found restaurants hard to find but up at the supermarket we used a great little place. Staff didn’t speak English but with a screen to order and Google translate, we had a great meal cooked to order.

The location is actually in Magome, a very small mountain town outside of Nakatsigawa. The views are incredible and the town is very nice.. small shops and old style buildings. And from there you can hike to Tsumago and beyond. Highly recommend

Definitely a step back in time to the Edo period trail system through the Kiso valley. A glimpse into village life in Japan. The builder and shops were so authentic and peaceful. The Nakasendo trail was blocks away to hike to Tsumago. Standing near the waterfalls where Myamato Musashi trained was a gift. An epic part of Japan.

Getting to our ryokan was a simple bus ride to the town from the train station. We were graciously greeted by the host of the ryokan. Delicious traditional dinner with many small dishes, all prepared with care. We started our hike early from Magome to Tsuamgo without many tourists which was a plus to take in the tranquility of the trail. The waterfalls along the way were impactful. Stopped for lunch in Tsumago and had cold soba with grilled fish, simple but delicious. If you decide to take the bus back to Magome in the late afternoon, be prepared to wait, there may be a line and the bus only runs every half hour, depending on the day.

Brilliant place to stay in Magome- a great place to experience the Nakasendo way. Combined a traditional style with modern touches. I stayed for one night in one room (I believe 5 rooms in total). It had a comfortable shared common area and shared toilet/shower facilities kept in very clean condition. The town itself is accessible via (roughly hourly) bus from Nakatsugawa. Highly recommend a stay here.

The hotel is located 8 minutes from train station which is great. The room was clean and very nicely equipped. The hotel have bath for men and for women and they also offer massages, unfortunately we were staying only for a night so we didn't take the opportunity to try it. We had breakfast included in our stay which was buffet style. Very good variety of Japanese cuisine to try and very tasty.

Very quiet at night. Comfortable bed. Helpful staff. Good Japanese buffet breakfast. There is a very good supermarket about 5-8 minutes walk across the river behind the hotel that has everything so not limited to the Family Marts in the area. Microwave is available to heat purchased food. A coin laundromat is next to the supermarket.

The food was really the winner of this stay - the best traditional Japanese food we’ve had on our trip. Also the location was perfect and everything was very neat and clean. It definitely exceeded my expectations being a 1-star hotel/ryokan.
