Nara is my favorite place in Japan.

Nara is my favorite place in Japan. It has really beautiful natural environment, lovely deer that you can easily see while walking on the street, and very friendly people. It has played a very important role in Japanese history (e.g. Horyuji, Toshodaija, etc. are important world heritage sites), but it does not have that many visitors as Kyoto, which makes traveling in Nara a lot more pleasant than travelling in Kyoto. I highly recommend people to travel to southern part of Nara Prefecture (e.g. Horyuji, Asuka-dera, Tsubosaka-dera, Oka-dera, etc.).

I didn’t check closing times of temples and it was hard to determine the last buses back from further out locations. I did end up having a nice evening walk along a riverside to find a train station to come back into town.

Nara is beautiful.

Nara is beautiful. There are two UNESCO world heritage sites and lots of deer. If you are afraid of animals, I don't recommend it. The deer will follow you if you have food and they may try to take it from you if you hesitate or don't gently push them away. They are not, as a general rule, aggressive. A lot of tourists freak out and just throw their crackers. Don't do that. Stay calm. The deer don't want to hurt you, they just want a snack. They don't care for being pet either. Just snap your crackers (200 yen sold at different stands) into 3-4 pieces, hold out your hand flat and let them take it from you. Be aware of how many are around you. They will surround and nibble your clothing. I found this hilarious. I grew up with cows and they will pretty much do the same thing. Use your voice and be gentle. The one day bus pass is really useful. I wish I had more time in Nara.

Nara Koen (park) is a beautiful place.

Nara Koen (park) is a beautiful place. Todaiji and Kasuga Kaisha is located nearby. The Sarusawa Ike (pond) behind the Nara Park leads to shopping place. One can spend whole day around Nara. - Beware of the deer, they might get a bit aggressive when offering food. - It gets crowded during on-season.

I love the deer and the ambiance of Nara.

I love the deer and the ambiance of Nara. Arrive early and expect crowds. As with anything else, the further you walk from the main area, you can stumble across more peaceful and secluded places. I would avoid Nara on the weekend, if possible. Deer can be friendly (and bow politely to ask for a treat) or aggressive (grabbing items out of your bag, biting your clothing, or being over-zealous). Keep your crackers high or out of sight and feel free to walk away from deer that are not vibing.

This is a beautiful, small city with wonderful restaurants, beautiful parks (filled with Nara's famous deer), a fascinating history and many sites of historical, architectural and religious significance - our only regret was the length of our stay, as two or three more nights would have been better as there is so much to see!

Room was clean and comfortable. We chose this because of the onsen style bath and it was well worth it. Bath was fantastic. Beds were very comfortable. Family weer very happy with the room. Location was very good, around 10-12 minute walk from the station and abour 5 minutes to the start of the deer park area. We opted for the set menu dinner at the hotel restaurant and it was fantastic. The adjusted menu for children was excellent and we all loved the meal.

Perfect location. Perfect hospitality. Perfect food. Perfect room. Hands down, this was the best stay we've had in any form of hotel or ryokan. Nara is an amazing place to visit, and Tsukihitei is THE place to stay in. Hidden in the most beautiful forest, just a short walk away from everything you want to see in Nara. The Roykan itself is built like fusion between zen garden and a Japanese palace.

Such a gorgeous hotel! Our room was lovely, we had our own private hot onsen on the balcony and it was nice to sleep in traditional Japanese beds. The hotel’s onsen is perfect for relaxing after a long day of sight seeing, and the staff are very sweet and helpful. It’s in a great location, within walking distance from of landmarks in Nara.

Fabulous location in Nara, walking distance to restaurants and the Main Street. The room was great - simple and efficient. My young children were very happy to have access to the private onsen. Breakfast was fabulous as well.
