The entire area was fabulous.

The entire area was fabulous. The town with its shrine, steam railway waterfalls and ancient bridge is a must see. The drive up to the lake was great and the walking from Lake Chuzenzi was delightful. No bears or birds sadly - next time perhaps.

Nikko proved to be an amazing refuge from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo, that was much needed. I visited in early September during a heatwave, and the elevation of Nikko and thus slightly lower temperatures made the stay incredibly refreshing. The temples, lake, waterfalls and the entire area were amazing to discover and very well connected with local public transportation.

The Toshugo shrine was amazing and well worth the trip.

The Toshugo shrine was amazing and well worth the trip. If you travel on to Takayama I recommend seeing the one tenth scale model of the shrine complex which is almost unbelievable in its detail and precision. Nikko is quite a sleepy town and many restaurants shut very early so I recommend making a reservation. The Nikko pass is worth purchasing, we enjoyed a day sightseeing on the local buses and trains. We had an outstanding dinner at Global Table, located on the Main Street in Nikko, well worth booking this for an unforgettable experience with Chef Ishida.

Our trip to Nikko was nothing short of magical.

Our trip to Nikko was nothing short of magical. The town is surrounded by some of the most beautiful forests and breathtaking waterfalls I’ve ever seen. Every corner feels like stepping into a postcard—lush, serene, and full of natural wonder. The town itself has such charm, with its cozy streets, warm hospitality, and a peaceful atmosphere that makes it easy to slow down and simply enjoy the moment. We stayed for three nights, which gave us time to explore, but we truly wish we had stayed longer. There’s so much more to see and experience, and the beauty of the area leaves you wanting to return.

We walked to the Togoshu Shrine; make sure you're prepared for uphill walks and a lot of stairs. The Main Street leading to the shrine was amazing. A ton of food vendors and restaurants. We took the bus to Kegon Falls. The ride was spectacular through the mountains and the village at the top was a pleasant surprise.

Touristy, somewhat charmless town that is nevertheless worth it for the magnificent shrines (Shinto, and the resting places of the first and third shoguns) and temples (Buddhist) and the museum (splurge on the museum! Seriously). Many people go to see these buildings + the red bridge (which is merely fine - short and not really noteworthy), but don't venture to the outskirts of Nikko to take in the other sites (Kanmangafuchi Abyss, Botanical Garden, Tamozawa Imperial Villa and much more impressive Nikko Dainichi Bridge).

Great location. Needed to be close to JR Nikko to catch an early train to Odawara. Hotel mins walk from JR, Tobu Nikko for sightseeing buses and Lion Dor supermarket. Would stay again. Room tiny, ok for 1 night, has kettle but no mugs/cups. Beds comfy. Complimentary breakfast of toast, egg, coffee, but we left before it opened. Free tea, coffee machine at reception. Microwave, vending and washing machine on ground floor, but no crockery provided except for paper bowls. 2 PCs and lounge with TV by reception too.

We were picked up from the train station by the hostess who is incredibly friendly. She gave us great tips on hikes, restaurants and general tips on what to do and see in Nikko. The apartment itself is spacious, especially when you’re arriving from relatively cramped hotels in cities like Tokyo. Also really liked the traditional Japanese bedroom!

Very comfortable room with lake view. Lovely staff. Full of care and advice to help us throughout our stay. Very nice food arrangements as we had half board. A great location to visit Nikki’s heritage sites (the bus to Nikko stops right in front of the hotel) and enjoy nature (great walks around). Excellent value for money.

Probably the best hotel in Nikko! It’s located right in the center, making it easy to reach the main attractions. The staff was very friendly, and even though the hotel doesn’t serve food, they left a croissant and coffee for breakfast in the morning. I also loved the wide selection of shampoos in the onsen.

Affordable hotel in beautiful Nikko located very conveniently near train station. We appreciated coin lockers in front of the entrance for luggages, even after our check-out. There is also a communal hot spring/sento for use, so you can freely enjoy morning or evening bath. Breakfasts were tasty.
