A bit expensive but ideally located in Kakunodate. The staff guided us to the house from the JR station. It is big and very comfortable for 2 people. The house is beautiful and feels a bit like being in a museum or an exposition room. They made the effort of changing the breakfast to vegetarian when we asked, which is not very common in Japan and greatly appreciated.

It is not a studio, but a larger facility that was mainly empty, maybe used in winter. But we enjoyed the hot bath and having shelter in the midst of the wood. Walking up the mountain we had a gorgeous view over the region - in the distance lake Tazawa. That was worth it!

Meals were easily the most intricate and most sophisticated of all the Ryokans I've tried. They go out of their way to showcase Akita specialties, which I really appreciate as it means I need not travel to restaurants specially to try them. They provide a private dining room and I cheekily thought to myself that this is so you can lick your plate clean! Indeed it was so delicious that if the Michelin inspectors came, I am sure they will get a star. Best service out of all the ryokans I went to - everyone is super attentive and super responsive. On the booking.com app, they were the most prompt to respond to messages. They had good recommendations for me on what I could do around Lake Tazawako and the surrounding area. Other examples of exemplary service: They took the initiative to ask me if I would like a picture with my meal (as I was a solo traveller). How delightful! Out of all the ryokans I stayed in, this is the only one who did that. Another example: they asked me if they could clean my room while I am out. This is unlike other hotels and ryokans that instead ask if I would like my room cleaned (assuming that the default is no). The room was of a most excellent layout with good separation of different areas and a good size such that it makes you feel like you are living in your own apartment and not so much a resort. The bed was also very comfortable - there is something special about the bed linens. They were so refreshing to the touch and so comfortable. At every corner there are thoughtful gestures - a little bench for you to admire a view, the tatami flooring throughout. Every effort has been made to make it a special and premium experience. Even the toilet is larger than some of what I’ve seen and has charming and tasteful decorations. I am so glad I tried out Kashintei Shirahama and hope to be back!

It's a beautiful house with fully equipped kitchen, blue tooth speaker, heater and a private onsen with mountain view. Free parking just outside the house. Super nice host who prepared special hot pot Kiritanpo Nabe which is super delicious with homemade grilled rice. Love the special dip for the crackers too. Were provided BBQ grill, charcoal for our BBQ. They also helped us buy Waygu beef from their regular supplier. We went to Wonder Mall at Kakunodate to buy BBQ stuff. Beef is cheap with great marbling. Host were very prompt in responding to all our queries. Highly recommended to stay here if you are in Akita.

Since I'm a local, I enjoyed drinks with my middle school...

Since I'm a local, I enjoyed drinks with my middle school friends and cousins. For regular tourists, I recommend renting a car and traveling around the area. There are many famous autumn foliage spots in the coming season. The autumn leaves at Kakunodate Samurai Residences are spectacular, and the autumn leaves at Dakigaeri Valley near the inn are also a must-see. It's also a good idea to go a little further and visit Akita Komagatake or Tamagawa Onsen. Don't forget to stop by Lake Tazawa. The value for money for a single person's stay without meals was excellent.

Kakunodate is small, yet has quite a lot to offer.

Kakunodate is small, yet has quite a lot to offer. We didn't have enough time. Everyone was incredibly friendly. It was a bit early in the year for us. It will be even more beautiful from April onwards. We combined our visit with a trip to an onsen in Tazawako.

The town of Kakunodate was very beautiful.

The town of Kakunodate was very beautiful. The old things have been well preserved. I felt that the townspeople treasured the town's history. Lake Tazawa was also very beautiful. I went there during a three-day weekend, but it wasn't too crowded and was very comfortable. I would like to come back during the cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons. There is a smoothie shop called Hinata Ekisu, where you can drink delicious smoothies made with local fruits. I recommend it. As for transportation, I thought it would be inconvenient without a car.
