For tourists looking for an authentic ryokan experience, the Noren Yado Meigetsu can't be beat. Shoji screens, tatami floors, and soft down comforters -- but with modern toilet, shower, and soaking tub
made our stay wonderful.
The host family is also extraordinarily kind and helpful explaining how things work and what ingredients are in each dish or how to cook certain dishes at your table. And the meals are delicious and beautiful!
Our stay in Tsuwano was made especially memorable by the family who run the Noren Yado Meigetsu ryokan.

Hoshi Ryokan is so good that staying there justifies the trip to Tsuwano all by itself.
An immense tatami room (actually two, a bedroom and a sitting room) plus a veranda to sit and watch the world go by. The owners are extremely gentle and helpful (they picked us up from the station even if it is only just across the road, just because it was raining so hard) and the breakfast and dinner are well worth having, and not only because there are few other options in town.
And you stay in a real family home, the way B&B used to be.

Located close to the historical street in Tsuwano.
The food was delicious with all kinds of fresh local dishes. Both dinner and breakfast time was flexible which was helpful.
Staff was very kind and helpful.
The room is simple authentic ryokan style, with futon bed.
The public bath is also great to relax after exploring town.
For an authentic ryokan experience in the countryside, the price is correct and reasonable.

The hotel produced a wonderful vegetarian menu for one of our party for the three day stay. Food for the 3 non-vegetarians was also exceptional with extensive 8-course menus. The onsen bath on the top floor was very relaxing. The hotel room was well appointed and very tasteful. Staff were very attentive and helpful to foreigners as well as Japanese guests.

Wonderful hospitality, telling us many good places in the town and even seeing off the people (and us) on the SL train. Good and healthy breakfast. Clean and comfortable room. The location is also good, just behind the TSUWANO station. It's just 10 min. on foot to the main area.
The host Manami made us feel like home! She speaks great English and made the check-in experience very smooth. Would recommend this hostel for anyone going to Tsuwano.
