Our stay at Duet Hostel was absolutely exceptional! The staff were incredibly kind and went above and beyond to make us feel at home, always very efficient and doing their best to cater to all your needs (laundry, food, tourist info, etc)! The facilities were spotless and cozy, and the restaurant served some amazing food, both western and local! Truly a wonderful experience – we can’t recommend it enough!

Most of the receptionists and managers spoke good English. Generally the staff was communicating well either with their phones, or by relying on another English-speaking colleague. We booked very late (about 2am) and arrived around 4:30am, we did not notify the Hotel, but the security guard let us in and the receptionist appeared after a few minutes too. The very big plus was, that in the morning I asked the receptionist to put away some food for us for breakfast, as because of our late arrival, probably we will sleep well past the breakfast time, and it would be nice if we could eat something. Many hotels don't help in this case, or just do the minimum, but not Hotel Karagat! When we woke up and called the reception, they delivered a lot of different food and a good amount too! It was very nice to be treated like this. The hotel has free parking, and they don't discriminate based on the car you drive (we rolled in with an old Moskvich). They found it interesting that we came all the way with a car like that :) The staff also helped us with different requests and answered questions too (like where to eat and what to see). The room, and the hotel in general was clean, smell nice, taken care of. All in all, I am very satisfied.

Karakol is a small, charming, village-like town located at...

Karakol is a small, charming, village-like town located at the foot of the mountains. The views are spectacular, the air is tasty-fresh, the food is diverse and as organic as it gets; most importantly, people are open, welcoming, a little reserved at first, but ready to help once you approach them. Infrastructure and buildings are decayed, but it only adds to the charm of the town if you are open to go through a little hardship here and there, especially if you are arriving from a megapolis. Karakol offers a few interesting museums and galleries, but the main attraction is that it is an intermediary place to starting your journey exploring peaks, gorges, vallies, hot springs and all the other natural gems that Kyrgyzstan offers its guests. The town itself has very interesting history and a crazy mix of many ethnic groups (Kyrgyz, Ukrainian, Dungan, Russian, Korean, German, Uzbek, Uyghur, Tatar, etc). Find yourself a local friend (easier to do in Kyrgyzstan) and he/she will open up doors to many other amazing sides of Karakol.

You can easily stay one week or longer in this destination.

You can easily stay one week or longer in this destination. There is everything you may expect from Kyrgyzstan: lake Issyk Kul just a few Km from Karakol, amazing mountains with lost od different treks: one-day or multiple-day. I suggest to definitely climb to Ala Kol lake, visit Teleti valley or go up to the pass, immerse in hot springs in Altyn Arashan, or if you need a modern structure go to Ak-Suu thermal pools. Jeti-Ögüz is a 100% must see, or go to Jargalan valley and admire dozens of semi-wild horses, rent one of them and enjoy the view to the world from horseback. Buy some local hand-made products e.g. shirdak carpets, taste awesome local cuisine (esp. lamb, plov or manty) and don't miss local market in Karakol, wooden Holy Trinity Cathedral, unusual architecture of Dungan mosque or Sunday animal market in the town suburbs.

If you're looking to go camping, this is perfect for you.

If you're looking to go camping, this is perfect for you. Others: If you're thinking you can book a tour for a couple of hours and see all the beauty of the country, no. There simply aren't any. Either go on a 5-day hike or stay home. We tried traveling on our own (taxi, minibus). Believe me, it's not the most comfortable option.

The main attraction is the mountains; in winter, there's a pretty good ski resort, and they say there's trekking in the summer. The city itself is so-so, especially in winter. But that's not the main thing; the most important thing is the nature around it, and it's magnificent.

This isn't my first time visiting this wonderful city. I've been both in summer and winter. I recommend visiting the Dungan Mosque and the Orthodox Church. I also recommend the Karakol tourist base with its chairlifts. And try the Ashlyan-fu dish. It's truly something.

Absolutely best stay in Kyrgyzstan. The family is so lovely and always give you food and tea. It feels much more like a homestay than hotel. Accommodation is new, spacious, clean and comfortable. The father is a butcher and is enthusiastic to show you local Kyrgyz life (going to animal market, buying animals, raising them, slaughter etc). I stayed during Qurban Ait and they helped me to buy a sheep, slaughter and distribute to widow families.

Really nice hotel in the centre of Karakol. Very friendly host who likes to have a chat. Nice size bedroom. Lots of options during breakfast. One of the better breakfasts we had during our trip in Kyrgyzstan. Within walking distance from the city centre. Good size parking. We got a recommendation for a nice place to have diner (Saymaluu). Really worth going there.
