Dambulla is an excellent base for exploring Kandy, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Sigiriya. We stayed there for 4 Nights and could cover the heritage sites easily. Dambulla Caves are a must-see and so is Sigiriya (just 16 Kms. away). I loved everything they have amazing vibe, nothing was to much trouble . All staff kind and helpful. Dambulla is quiet but has local shops, cafes Pizza Hut, great small restaurant a few miles from Evergreen serving very good food. It's run by the people who run Evergreen. So recommended by me.. Our 2 nights in the hotel were great, but the main highlight was the staff. All of them were friendly and helpful everytime, specially Siduu and Tito, who shared more time with us.
