Beach and Fun in Penang

Batu Ferringhi is a combination of a beach resort packed with modern hotels and a tropical Asian paradise. Located in the Penang area of northern Malaysia, it is one of the biggest resorts of its kind in the country. Restaurants, shopping centres and numerous modern services and facilities are also available, along with its well-known ‘Pasar Malam’ or Night Market.

The strip along Jalan Batu Ferringhi Street is the main service area, and you’ll find a large variety of hotels on the beach, apartments and guest houses. The area can be divided in three different zones: Tanjung Bungah to the east, Batu Ferringhi itself, and the quieter Teluk Bahang to the west. Things to do in the surroundings include the ‘Butterfly Farm’, home to a collection of thousands of beautiful specimens; and the ‘Spice Garden’, which features a lush landscape with a large variety of herbs and spices. Loved the pool table at the lobby lounge! (Needed to pay for it though). The mocktails were not really good, besides the parkroyal punch. Clean pool with cool slides. Very big and spacious beds which can probably fit 4-5 people! Nothing wrong with the hotel besides the mocktails, maybe. The beach was a little disappointing (polluted). We could see black oil bottles flowing in the water with their lids off, which wasn't very pleasant. But the water sports were fun.

Batu Ferringhi Beach is a nice place to spend a few days.

Batu Ferringhi Beach is a nice place to spend a few days. You can easily walk along the shore, and although a lot of garbage washes in with the waves each day, the hotels make an effort to clean the beach regularly. The sand is firm, and the water is not clear. There are water sports available as well.

There is only one route in.

There is only one route in. Currently there is a landslide (as of 5th december 2025) which blocks one lane completely There are traffic wardens but it causes severe congestion in the morning and afternoon during peak hours Please time yourselves, and plan for extra 1 hour approx

Unfortunately, the sea was too rough to swim whilst we were there, we managed to lie on the sand and let the waves wash over us but it was far to dangerous to venture further out. I expect it is beautiful and safer when it is less stormy. The main street has some great places to eat, the place that does roti opposite The Hard Rock Cafe is excellent and there are lots of places to get a massage, we went to one called Paradise (if I remember rightly) which was nice. The night market is also excellent for food, lots of choice and I'd recommend the satay and curries from there.

Batu Ferringhi, is a great place for a relaxing holiday in the warm. The food in Penang is the big drawcard. It is great for chilling out and leaving the stress behind. The Night Markets are also great. Best of all is Long Beach Cafe, which is a market place which opens in the evening and has the best food, cheap as chips. Great restaurants everywhere. Dont forget to go to Ferringhi Walk and Bora Bora for Dinner. Food, Glorious Food.

We were up the road from Batu Ferringhi, which was nice. Batu Ferringhi is touristy and fun. We ate at the local cafes there - which is great value for money and delicious food. Western options for the kids abound there. Beach was lovely, did some parasailing. We had a car which made it really easy to move around. Its a way from Georgetown, so we found it useful to have our own transport. Renting a small car was very economical.

We had a wonderful stay at Doubletree by Hilton Penang. Experienced lovely and warm hospitality by the staff. Our little daughter left her iPhone at the hotel. The housekeeping crew went way above and beyond their scope of work and courier it to us immediately the next day at KL, or else we would miss the parcel as we stayed only one night at KL. We must express our special thanks to Ms Srivalli Muniandy, Housekeeping Coordinator, and her team. It really means a lot 🥰 ❤️ 😔

Breakfast was amazing, with a wide selection to provide for all different requirements. The Staff were polite & friendly and very helpful. Location was ideal, right on the beach, and close to Batu Ferringhi, if you wanted to leave the hotel. Also Penang Island and George Town were close by . The rooms were brilliant. We had balcony with a pool/beach/sunset view. The rooms were clean and spacious, with everything you could ask for. The car park was good too.

gd location to beach, but beach not very clean, black soot, good for u if u like watersports and easy access to escape theme park, penang hill, tropical spice garden and fruit farm. can stay minimum one or two nights if going above places. staff Kavitha was very helpful with ferry timing to Langkawi and Mohan grandpa was nice. comfortable stay. just opposite the hotel there is fruit stall which is cheap and good service and fresh.
