Was there on a warm late summer Friday at the city center.

Was there on a warm late summer Friday at the city center. The vibe was absolutely charming. All the restaurants had open air tables that were filled with friends and families. Wherever you walked, there was a happy buzz of conversation, everyone like bees in a hive. Loved how the residents of all ages get around on bicycles. Went to an incredible cheese shop, Kaashandel van der Leij, that had not just local fare, but also an impressive collection of cheeses from other European locations. Visited the encyclopedic Groninger Museum that had interesting contemporary and historic collections as well as an impressive collection of ancient Asian ceramics.

Lovely lively city with good places to eat and drink.

Lovely lively city with good places to eat and drink. Everything is very central and it is easily accessible by train from Schipol Airport. I felt safe there. Check out The Forum.. fabulous panoramic view of the city.

Groningen is a bit of a hidden gem in The Netherlands.

Groningen is a bit of a hidden gem in The Netherlands. Pretty much like a small scale Amsterdam, but in a positive sense. I very much appreciate the abundance of small designer shops and outlets. The Museum at the Station is a jewel of 80ies architecture.

A gorgeous small Dutch city that is really easy to walk around. Beautiful architecture and canals, many amazing restaurants and cosy coffee shops. The forum is a must-visit with incredible views in good and bad weather. The restaurant at the top of it has great views and lovely cake, drinks, snacks and food. The library inside the forum is impressive. If you have time visit the Martini church - the church has an incredible collection of art of the artist Edgar Modderman that is worth visiting. Best meal: The tastermenu at Pachamama serving Japanese-South American fusion food: this was a sense explosion. Every single mouthful was exquisite. My favourite tourist gift was the peanutbutter from the depindakaaswinkel, especially the stroopwafel kaneel flavoured one.

The hotel was located in a quiet corner of Groningen old city. It is a former monastery that is surrounded by gardens and within walking distance of the Martini Tower and the old town. I really enjoyed my room that had a great view of the garden. It was spacious and comfortable and had a great bathroom attached. I also enjoyed the minibar which was included. Staff were very friendly and helpful.

Excellent location in city centre close to main square and plenty of eating and shoping close by. Short walk from station and close to bus routes. Hotel was busy with events going on but not obtrusively, we had rooms at rear and these were very quiet.

The hostel is actually an annex of Martini Hotel placed close to the city center. The rooms were clean a little bit small for my taste, minimally equipped, but maybe this is the norm for hostel, I assume.nexx
