Wild and Wonderful Welly

Acclaimed for its thriving art, film and cultural scene, windy ‘Welly’ is enclosed by mountains such as Kaukau and Victoria on one side and the picturesque Wellington Harbour on the other. Wellington has the distinction of being the world’s southernmost capital city.

As the gateway to New Zealand’s magical south island, Queens Wharf is headquarters for ferry services across Cook Strait as well as in the direction of Eastbourne on the other side of the harbour.

Get your bearings by using the Kelburn cable car that starts at Lambton Quay and travels up to the Botanic Gardens and Carter Observatory with its sweeping views across the Miramar Peninsula and local bays.

We were doing a Sir Edmund Hiliary Tour which was excellent and finished in Wellington. We enjoyed our extra 3 days on our own to explore Wellington - Parliament House, the Cable Car and the wonderful Te Papa Museum.! The ANZAC exhibition was absolutely excellent !! Not to be missed.!!

Wellington is my favourite NZ city.

Wellington is my favourite NZ city. Compact, easy to navigate with transport system. (I live in Paraparaumu now.) As young children, then living in Feilding, we had regular holidays in Wellington. We always felt safe and were left to navigate many interesting places on our own. Never got lost. I'm now 84, and still find it easy to navigate with the great transport system. Te Papa a regular 'must see'. The cable car. Good views and food at the top. Just take a bus and do the round trip. From beaches to architecture, etc, something for everyone.

An amazing mix of old and new architecture!

An amazing mix of old and new architecture! Shopping is brilliant!! The theatres have amazing decor, great acoustics. Some great little art galleries and boutique shopping. I love Cuba St, the waterfront. You'll need at least one day for Te Papa, another for our seat of governance, the Beehive and the National Library. If you book ahead, you might get a tour. Same if you want to eat at Bellamy's. Great Irish pub in Cuba St, restaurant's. everywhere, cafes. Don't forget to go on the Cable Car!

We absolutely 💯 ❤️ Wellington, just not the wind, and oh how crazy , windy it was. Thank goodness our relatives still managed a walk around the city and ride the Cabel Car before traveling across to the South Island on the BlueBridge Ferry.

Due to the terrible weather our show was cancelled, which was the whole reason to be in the city. However the weather the next day was magic with a lovely walk around the shops and along the waterfront (excellent gelato there), great eating places (The Grand was a standout), a visit to Te Papa (especially the nature section and Gallipoli), but a shame that the Banksy exhibition at Tahina was finished.

Windy but worth it. Stunning views and loads to do.

Windy but worth it. Stunning views and loads to do. Make use of the busses it saves you from having to pay ridiculous amounts for parking in CBD, and we just walked everywhere with the stroller. We hired a croc bike for 30min on the walkway and then had delicious crafted shakes at the Shake Bar. Te Papa museum was good for the rainy day and we enjoyed the Cable Car up to the gardens and the lovely stroll down. The Crab Shack is a must for dinner! Lovely atmosphere, amazing food and the friendliest staff.

Location was brilliant. We were going to Kinky boots at St James and its right next door. Airport bus almost stops right outside door to as do buses for zoo. Irish pub Jack Hackett is on opposite corner and has great food and entertainment. Easy walking distance to everything in Wellington city. Reception staff are very friendly and helpful. Comfy bed, good shower pressure. Small window but nice enough view over to bay.

This place is an institution in Wellington. One of the oldest buildings in a city that isn't very old. The location is very convienient and the room very clean and comfortable. I appreciate the bath. It's not something you find often in hotels these days and having a long soak was one of the most relaxing things I did during my entire holiday. I also loved that there were so many coffee and breakfast places closeby.

The hotel is insanely well situated for a city adventure in Wellington - I went for a gig and being less than a block from the venue was unreal for convenience. The hotel has beautiful shared spaces, with a great downstairs bar. Room was well appointed, with decent modern amenities and cool fit out.
