At first Ilo doesn't look that promising, as you pass the...

At first Ilo doesn't look that promising, as you pass the copper refinery on the way into town. But the town centre is rustic, with some marvellous old buildings and a very well laid out plaza. The views of the fishing harbour, especially from the main pier, are spectacular. The promenade along the water front has some great seafood eateries and a good vibe. We took a boat tour from the main pier, and got to see the massive sea lions who love sunbaking on the buoys in the harbour. From Ilo you can do a day trip inland to Moquegua, which is only about 1hr 15mins away. Classic Peruvian desert scenery.

Not much to do. Not very pleasant. The food is good.

Not much to do. Not very pleasant. The food is good. Payment methods are difficult; only cash and Yape are accepted, which is harder to use as a foreigner. There are no taxi or food delivery apps. Getting around has to be done using local transport or by looking for rides on the street. Few places accept card payments. Foreigners should be careful, as they try to inflate prices when buying things.

A small but very pleasant city...generally clean for a port, I found it entertaining and safe...good food, beautiful and clean beaches, friendly people, and generally safe. Worth a weekend getaway. The coastal boardwalk, the main square, its church, old buildings, the Gálvez roundabout, and the beaches both inside and outside the city limits...
