Honiara is almost a third world city, plenty of people, shops selling crap to the locals. but people are friendly plenty of different types of food outlets. traffic is not good during week days. but i love the place Solomon's is an untouched paradise outside of Honiara, its limited in facilities but the beauty of the islands on top of people that are friendly, helpful makes it a place to visit. dont expect to much in facilities but if your adventuress this is the place to go.

Tourism here is quite undeveloped compared to other Pacific countries but I found Karen at Iumi Tour Solomons excellent. She arranged a couple of day tours when I was stranded in Honiara due to frequently changed flight schedules. Allow for things to go wrong and it is a wonderful experience if a little gritty.

I was there to visit the US Marine Corps battle sites: Edson's Ridge, Alligator Creek, Battle of Henderson Field, and others. There's a lot to see in 1 week, so plan in advance what you want to see - and get in shape to hike in the heat. These are real jungle battlefields, and with luck you'll find relics and remnants.

Not set up for independent tourists, it's still possible to go and arrange thing yourself. i hired a banana boat to take me to Roderick Bay to see the wreck of the World Discoverer with a stopover in Tulagi. There's no a lot to do in the main centre so get away from the dust and see a bit of the island. The dive shop is shut for walk-in business, but i was told to ring to arrange something. The beach at Bonegi is worth the visit for snorkeling on the WW2 wreck. The Sugar Plum restaurant in the Art Gallery is good cheapish food. Next door is a path to take you to a more upmarket and excellent breakfast cafe called the Breakwater. There's a sign outfront.

It offers people a view of a primitive society.

It offers people a view of a primitive society. It is safe, and offers interesting historical and cultural views. The hotels vary and are clean and safe. Tours are available to see historic places from World War II that were active in the Solomon Islands. There are ways to enjoy the water snorkeling at a few places that are really beautiful. This is not a sandy beach, luxury island. Water ways are also used for disposing of garbage. The streets are covered with Beetle nut spit. You don't walk barefoot. Shanty's line the streets in out of town. Individual gardens are the source of food. But grocery stores are starting to import canned and dried goods. Their gardens provide most of the food. They are now building good new schools and encouraging the young people to be able to improve their lives with education.

My partner and I had a wonderful stay at Island Home. We had to spend one night in Honiara because of a flight rescheduling from Air Vanuatu and it’s safe to say we couldn’t have spend it any better. Junior and Janet were amazing hosts. They took us around so we could get cash out, went for drinks and even a kava bar. Our accommodation was comfortable and even had a kitchen, which is super useful! We only came to Honiara for a layover but now we want to come back and see the Solomon Islands. And when we do, we will happily stay here again!

There was little to like about the room other than it was large and the A/C worked just well enough to keep the room at a tolerable temeprature. It was also fairly closely located to the place I was attending a meeting (another hotel, which had no available rooms, hence my stay here).

Usually stay at Mendana, Heritage Park or Coral Seas but they have become ridiculously expensive and no longer offer a value proposition. Aircon was good, nice fridge, hot water to shower.
