We really loved our stay here. The staff is very accomodating and helpful and the fresh seafood was wonderful everyday. The beach is quiet and beautiful to go for a swim.

Location is perfect. The walk to the city by the beach is about 20 min and you walk across the local village area. Even the town is super safe to walk around and locals are always helpful. ATMs are in the city as everything is paid by cash. Food at the lodge is good and always fresh, we had dinner there every day for the 2 weeks we ended up staying. Always local and different types of fish, prawn, octopus and sea food curries with rice or chapati. Beverages with a good price and always cold. Musa can organize anything you wish to do on the island! The rooms are cleaned daily and bedding is changed. All the lodges have a terrace and there is chilling area at the beach and the garden. Hot shower and wifi is a major plus. You can get coffee and tea whenever you want and the filtered water is always full. The rooms have working fans above the beds and clean bathrooms. Rooms are a good size and have proper beds. Oh and the airport pick up is included in the price! Thank you for everything 💜

We went as a family with kids. Ofcourse value for money compared to those hotels near to the beach. Mafia is a big island but inhabitants is low. Having said that, this hotel was near to any basic amenities required. It is even just 5 to 7 minutes walk to the domestic airport. The staffs welcomed us very well and made our stay exceptionally perfect. They even organized good deal excursion, we all kids managed to see whale-shark and swim with them at Kilindoni which was 10 minutes drive from this hotel. Even snorkeling and blue-lagoon was amazing at Utende which was about 40 minutes drive. All transport was well provided and taken care of us. Looking forward to be back!

Please note that my review refers to Butiama Beach Lodge! A slight misunderstanding meant that we had booked Butiama Bustani but were taken to Butiama Beach upon pickup from the airport. Once there (at Butiama Beach) and once we realised we were at the 'wrong' hotel, instead of transferring to Butiama Bustani were we had actually booked, we asked if we could pay the supplement and stay at Butiama Beach, which we did (luckily they had a room available). The Butiama Beach Lodge is a truly wonderful and romantic place for a relaxing holiday. The service is excellent, the food is delicious, the rooms are very comfortable (with a hammock on the veranda that I could have stayed in forever was it not for all the other nice things one wanted to see and do at the lodge), the sunsets over the ocean are gorgeous, and there are several activities that one can easily join thanks to the hotel's own activity manager. As it wasn't the right season for the whale sharks, we joined a boat going out to watch humpback whales. The sea was quite rough, no possibility to keep the camera out for all the water splashing in, but seeing the whales was a great experience!

When looking for a genuine, immersive and take it is experience Kitu Kiblu is a great choice to take. We spent a wonderful week there and are enthusiastic of all facilities and people; everything is exactly as described in the profile. Accomodations could be choosene to be more discreet (on the trees) or more common and we strongly suggest the second option; apart from an incredible quality/price ratio the whole experience deserves to be done! We appreciated so much to have shower in the jungle surronded by palm leafs and accept a rope is the door for the toilet (yes, it's true and frankly speaking all is priceless!!!!). All the description look a bit as only for brave and indeed this "return to the basic" is exaclty what I think it should be experienced to understand we don't need that much to feel happy, just go back to the essential and appreciate!!! People have been very friendly and inclusive and did their best to let us feel welcomed and help for local activities.

Mgeni Homestay was the best value accomodation that we've stayed in during our African travels. While the building itself is basic the rooms have everything you need: comfortable bed and pillows, mosquito net, ceiling fan, somewhere to sit that isn't the bed and places to hang your drying towels (and clothes if you've done some handwashing). Aly was also very helpful at organising excursions and taxis for us, while Bunda cooked fresh, delicious and generous meals (including a good amount of vegetables, which can be hard to come by). The homestay is close enough to the airport that you can walk there if you have packs (not ok for wheelie suitcases) and don't mind a hot walk. The ATMs are also a short walk further than the airport so they are also accessible. We appreciated our stay so much that we returned for second stay before leaving the island.

Location is great, rooms are clean, modern and with all the amenities you might need. The pool was a great addition. Staff is extremely friendly and the dive quipment is brand new! Can't reccomend dive planet enough!

I absolutely loved my stay at Basecamp and can’t wait to return. The hotel is beautiful and the service of the staff exceptional. They can’t do enough to make guests feel comfortable and accommodated for. The rooms are stunning, overlooking the beach and the pool and restaurant areas are a great place to relax. For divers there’s a dive shop within a minute’s walk and for non divers alternative excursions from the hotel. A wonderful place to stay for some quiet time on a white sand beach.
