FAQs about hotels in San Francisco

An Icon of Liberalism

Home to one of America’s icons – the Golden Gate Bridge – San Francisco is a liberal city where life is very much for the living.

Surrounded on 3 sides by water, it is spread over steep hills that make for great photo opportunities. None better than the zig-zag Lombard Street seen in many a film. Other movie stars are the streetcars plying the hill climbs – a little touristy, but still worth trying.

In the middle of the bay is Alcatraz island, famed for the notorious criminals once imprisoned there. Even if you don’t fancy going inside, the views towards the bridge and city are unparalleled.

Nowhere in San Francisco is life more laidback than on the Pacific beaches. Hire a bike and head out there via the huge Golden Gate Park, before returning to sample some fresh seafood at Fisherman’s Wharf. The clam chowder served in (yes, actually in!) bread is a delight. Chinatown also has a great selection of good value restaurants.

As you fly into San Francisco Airport, look out for the exclusive homes lining the Bay Area. Whether you want to stay in apartments along those lines, luxury San Francisco hotels or cheap hostels, Booking.com has something to suit. Be careful though – you might just leave your heart here.

We loved the city which has a lot of character with its interesting architecture, steep hills, lots of greenery, cycle friendly and the cable cars and trams, some great bars and diverse neighbourhoods. North Beach and Chinatown which adjoin each other were great at night and the lively Castro district and the bookshops, clothes shops and mansions of the Haight/Ashbury. It felt very safe which was good as we did a lot of walking.. the only part not so keen on was the Tenderloin area.

It was my first time in San Francisco and it was absolutely beautiful! There was so much to do. There's gorgeous beaches nearby as well as parks and forests. There's so much activity to get involved in and the area is truly gorgeous.

I loved San Francisco!

I loved San Francisco! I loved the wharf area, the walk to the Golden Gate Bridge, and the relaxed feel of the city. Getting around San Francisco is super easy with cable cars, trolley trams, buses, Ubers, Waymo (driverless cars), and e-bikes and e-scooters for hire. The Fisherman's Wharf area has lots of fun activities, such as watching the local Sea Lions on the jetty, riding the Observation Ferris Wheel for amazing views of the whole bay area, visiting Alcatraz, walking or cycling over the Golden Gate Bridge, and driving through the very steep streets!

I grew up 40 years ago in the San Francisco area.

I grew up 40 years ago in the San Francisco area. Returning there was so different. Traffic is horrendous. But the homeless population and filth and garbage in the streets where we stayed around Fisherman’s Wharf was the real eye opener. We did not feel safe walking around in the evening in the dark. People were sleeping, urinating, and masturbating in the streets. Overall, very disgusting. The only positive things were the hotel we stayed at and a couple restaurants we went to. Good food, but expensive. We have zero desire to return.

This is our second visit in S.F. during the past two months. We meet many visitors from other countries who had very positive comments about S.F. We walked several miles around the city. We only saw one homeless person and the city was very clean.

I really liked the complementary coffee and lounge area. As for the room, it was indeed very small. I didn’t mind that much as I was staying outside the hotel for the whole day but the space would be too small if you’d like to spend more time there. Also the location was not the best - on one hand in the downtown, close to train station and many attractions, but on the other just in the middle of the biggest homeless camps in San Francisco. You need to move through them to get to entrance, almost literally:(

We had a short 3-day stay in San Francisco and enjoyed our time at the Handlery Union Square Hotel. The bed was comfortable. There was a small fridge were we could store some items. Clean room and refreshed every day. We had some benefits at a nearby diner as thanks for being a Handlery guest. The Hotel is on the margins of Union Square, which in itself is safe. A bit of caution needed when going a few streets beyond.

I've stayed at numerous Union Square hotels in the last 15 years and this is by far the best for that budget. Recently renovated, the rooms are bright, quiet, large and with all modern comfort. The lobby and bar area are gorgeous. The 3 elevators ensure you never wait more than 30 seconds to get to or from your room. The staff is helpful and nice, and there is a breakfast restaurant within the building.
