It feels incredibly authentic. For anyone staying here, I'd just say trust the process, the host is the sweetest little old man who hosts really fun karaoke evenings. It wasn't what we expected going into it but this place gave us some great laughs and memories for life.

Location was easy to find from the bus we took from the train station. The hostel was exactly what we wanted, and the staff were incredibly friendly and easy to get a long with. They directed us to the nearest Onsen that would be open late, and lent us some bicycles so we could cycle there through the peaceful town. The on-site bar was one of the nicest i've been in and the cocktails were excellent, we had to try every option available. The owner and bar staff were great fun and we had a great evening with their hospitality. We wish we could have stayed another night! Good transport connections to the local attractions, and the owner made some excellent suggestions on where we should visit. Could not recommend the place more. A highlight of our trip for sure and we wish everyone at Root Hakone the best.

I like everything about it! The room was clean, enough space for to put my bags, the staff were nice, the onsen was good (the temperature is a bit lukewarm though), the food was good as well. I love everything about it.

Extremely friendly and helpful staff! They speak very good English and even organized an Onsen visit for me and another guest on the same day. The guest house is super cozy and it’s very nice to relax in the common area with the tatami floors. The guest house is located very close to Hakone open air museum, so it’s easy to reach by bus.

Perfect location - 1 minute from bus stop. Very clean - I was afraid it won't be clean because it's shared house, but they were cleaning every day and bathroom and kitchen were exceptionally clean. Staff was very friendly and helpful. They adviced places to visit, which bus to take, etc. As a bonus, the whole place feels so cozy! There are so many cute accessories everywhere. There are many books to choose from in the common area, they even sell some basic necessities or souveniers. I really recommend this place, thank you.

The owners were exceptionally nice, always willing to help and pleasant to chat with. The whole pension is nicely designed with great shared space that allows either for remote work, or an opportunity to meet and chat with other people.
