I absolutely loved staying at Momiji hostel! Hide-san told and showed me everything around the house and gave some advice on where to go in the neighborhood, made a simple yet good breakfast in the morning. We've had a pleasant talk with Hide-san before I left, and he made sure I got on the bus to the Takamori station. I was surprised with being the only one to stay overnight that day, and I felt super comfortable. The arcade machine, the room samurai katana and tanto, the shampoo bar with Hide-san's personal recommendations, the bookshelf with manga in different languages, and the two lovely cats Nuan and Riku who even have their own Instagram - everything was top-notch!
Hide-san, I would love to meet you again some day!

It’s a beautiful quiet place to stay.
It’s only 5 minutes walk to the bus station to the airport.
The staffs are helpful and friendly, and I’m sorry that I carried a very heavy suitcase.
They supply drinks on the front desk, so you can chat with other travelers or the staffs while you drinking.
I really enjoyed the time I stayed.

This traditional Japanese-style house is full of character and beautifully designed with great attention to detail. While it’s not a fully private room, the sleeping area is well separated, offering a comfortable sense of privacy. Sounds do carry a bit, as it’s an old house, but the creativity in the space makes each stay feel fresh and inspiring.
It’s conveniently located—about 10 minutes by bus to Shin-Suizenji Station and around 15 minutes to central Kumamoto. The nearby “Gootarian” space is also a nice addition.
The area has historic spots like Kengun Shrine, perfect for a morning walk. With shops, supermarkets, and convenience stores nearby, it’s easy to grab a bento or snacks and relax at the accommodation. It really feels like staying in a local home.
Free parking is a big plus. I prefer not to drive at night, so being able to park and explore by bus has worked out perfectly.
Featuring a bar, Hotel The Gate Kumamoto offers rooms in Kumamoto, 3.1 km from Hosokawa Residence Gyobutei and 3.3 km from Kumamoto Castle.

The two ladies at the front office who spoke perfect English, thank you for the great conversations. It was a pleasure meeting you both.
Great location. Subway and tram is directly across the road from the property. Easy access point to navigate yourself around.
It was raining whilst I was there. Mall is across the road, restaurants at the upper levels. Good variety to choose from.
Value for money. Spacious rooms when you book out the whole room to yourself. Personal in room locker and door lock.

Staying at this rebuilt hospital was a highlight of our journey. The atmosphere, materials, and lighting is very beautiful. We got very warmly welcomed and it was a pleasure to enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner at the main floor restaurant. We definitely recommend it to spend some calm relaxing days! They also provide bicycles to discover the beautiful nature around or drive to a nearby onsen place or to the sea.
