Taupo is an absolute mecca for all things outdoors – including hiking the famous Tongariro crossing, trout fishing, skydiving, jet boating, white water rafting, mountain biking and sailing on the Great Lake with the hostel's yacht 'Fearless'. The bed! Normally I don't like upper bunk bed but this one is stairs, not ladders to going up. Also, there are 2 pillows in the bed that never happened in another hostel in NZ. I really appreciate that!

Based by the Lake offers basic dormitory-style rooms or private guest bedrooms with ensuite facilities. All of the accommodation is clean and modern and linen is included. Location was close to the lake, the food, the supermarket, everything. Amenities (kitchen and laundry) were clean and well thought out. Enjoyed the girls only dorm with the extra perk of a private balcony.
