This fully equipped period country cottage is totally evocative of my earliest memories of living on a remote farm with all the quirks and tweaks that that brings. The inclusion of family mementoes throughout is also very engaging. The kitchen's...

Capon Cottage was the retirement home in Broken Hill of our family after 60 years as graziers on a sheep station on the banks of the Darling River between Wilcannia & Tilpa. That property was called, unsurprisingly, Capon Station. The Paroo River also ran through the property after good rainfalls in Queensland & was accompanied by bountiful wildlife & flora. Visitors came from all over Australia to stay at the property, in the shearer's quarters or just on the river bank, totally free of charge as was the custom in those days in the bush. Visitors usually arrived with a case of their produce (a case of almonds if that's what they farmed) & often shared their fish catch on departure. Station stays have since been devaloped to help sustain incomes in grazing's harsher economic climate of today. Capon Station was originally part of Momba, a pastoral holding which, in the mid to late 1880s was the largest sheep & cattle station in NSW. After the many, many visitors from Australia & beyond enoying Capon's hospitally fishing, camping & exploring, this cottage, in some small way, has been dedicated to the memory of our family's 60 year association with the Outback of Far Western NSW
I am a photographer & I post many outback images, local flora & fauna, landscapes, buildings, sunsets, restored historical photos of paddle steamers & the like, in fact anything relevant to Broken Hill and district on the Capon Cottage's Facebook page. I also share images from the many talented photographers from the area. Please have a look and like the page!
Capon Cottage is situated in an area of Broken Hill that is predominently tourist accommodation. In it's immediate block are holiday villas, cottages & a motel. All have been built in the area since Capon Cottage due to being so conveniently situated to shops & tourist attractions. Westside Plaza Shopping Centre is walking distance & the Silverton Road to take guests to the delightful historic township is the next street corner. A couple of intersections further along is the street taking guests to the Sculpture Symposium. All this & the cottage is in the quiet residential Harvey Street.
