Think of it as a stylish little tiny house, all open plan, all in one space, perfect for solo travelers, couples, or two very close friends who don’t mind sharing their air, the double bed & their bathroom sounds 😅 Inside, you’ll find a comfy double bed, a cute kitchenette for making toast or a late-night cuppa, a plush couch to sink into, and a TV with free Netflix and Wi-Fi for your binge-watching needs. The ensuite-style bathroom blends into the space, no doors, no secrets, just you and the open air between you and the loo. You’ve been warned (lovingly!). But the real showstoppers? The fairy penguins! Yes, we have actual little penguin visitors who sometimes waddle up to say hi at night. It’s as magical as it sounds. You’ll also enjoy free off-street parking and be just steps from the beach, literally across the road. A charming little coffee van is just a three-minute stroll away, near the local chemist, and there are amazing walking and bike tracks that lead all the way to Burnie or Somerset. Nature, coffee, and penguins? Yes, please. It’s compact, it’s quirky, it’s uniquely coastal and it just might be your next favourite affordable getaway.

Hi there! I’m a proud local of Tasmania’s beautiful northwest coast, having grown up in the charming seaside village of Somerset. I’ve always loved everything about this stretch of coast, the sea breeze, the walking trails, the tight-knit community, and of course… the fairy penguins! My husband and I own and manage a small handful of short stay properties along the coast, and we’re passionate about creating warm, memorable stays for our guests. The Studio Guest House is especially close to our hearts. The main home was built in 1919 and has been in the family for the last 10 years. We put a lot of love into renovating both the house and the little studio to give it a fresh, cozy feel while still keeping its original character. One of our favourite things about hosting here is sharing the space with the penguins, who’ve been nesting in our backyard and under the deck for the past decade. We work hard to make sure their little colony stays safe and happy and while they might wake you up with a midnight squawk, they’re truly part of what makes this place so special. We love welcoming guests from all over, and we hope you’ll fall in love with this beautiful patch of Tasmania just as much as we have.

Cooee is perfectly positioned between Burnie and Somerset, with Wynyard just a short drive away making it an ideal base to explore the best of Tasmania’s northwest coast. Guests love how central yet peaceful the neighbourhood feels, with the beach literally across the road and walking and cycling tracks stretching all the way from Burnie to Somerset. Whether you’re up for an early morning stroll or a long coastal ride, this area has the scenery to match. Burnie is home to the Little Penguin Observation Centre, where you can enjoy free guided tours during the warmer months and spot fairy penguins returning to shore at dusk, it’s a magical experience for all ages. And if you’re lucky, you might even see a few of their waddling cousins right outside your door at Cooee! Foodies can dive into the famous Tasting Trail, visiting local chocolate factories, distilleries like Hellyers Road, and fresh produce stops scattered throughout the region. For a dose of arts and culture, the Burnie Regional Art Gallery and Makers’ Workshop offer local history, crafts, and exhibitions with a creative coastal twist. In nearby Wynyard, guests can explore Table Cape’s stunning clifftop views and tulip fields (especially breathtaking in spring), or discover prehistoric fossils at Fossil Bluff Beach. The Inglis River and surrounding foreshore parks also make Wynyard a favourite for picnics and relaxed riverside walks. And don’t overlook the charm of Somerset itself. The Cam River is great for kayaking, fishing, or simply soaking in the peaceful riverside vibe.
