Sardina is in Gáldar, which is located 27 kilometres from the capital Las Palmas. The highest point of the municipality is at an altitude of 1,700 metres. In the higher areas of this northern municipality we find well-differentiated morphologies, the Montañón Negro, the Caldera de los Pinos de Gáldar and the Hondo de Fagagesto. The city of Gáldar, head of one of the ancient kingdoms of the island before the Conquest of Gran Canaria, shows part of its ancient past in the Archaeological Park of the Cueva Pintada, in the centre of the city, where one of the main findings of cave art in the Atlantic area can be found. The city centre, declared a Historic Site in 1981, preserves several remarkable buildings. The Templo Matriz de Santiago de Gáldar, one of the most beautiful in the Canary Islands, is considered to be the bridge between the Baroque style and the early Neoclassicism of the archipelago. Interesting works of art are preserved in the church, such as the Pila Verde, where the defeated Canary Islanders were first baptised after the conquest of the island.
