Neighbourhood information

Place de la Comédie, also known as ‘Place de l'Œuf’ (Egg Square) due to its oval shape, is the nerve centre of the city centre. It is approximately 230 metres long and 50 metres wide, making it one of the largest pedestrian areas in France. It owes its name to the municipal theatre, the Opéra Comédie, whose monumental façade adorns the south side. The neighbourhood is rich in history: the square has been in place since 1755, on the site of the former fortifications of the medieval city. The theatre was rebuilt after fires in 1785 and 1881.
